In the play The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, many characters played a role in the murder of King Duncan but Lady Macbeth is responsible for it all. In the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth reads Macbeth’s letter. After she reads the letter she looks up and essentially says, “I am worried that you don’t have what it takes to be the King. You lack what it takes; you want to be in power but you cannot get the things done that are called for. Hurry home so I can persuade you into doing whatever is stopping you from taking the crown” (Crowther). Macbeth does not want to kill the king. He says, “The king trusts me in two ways. As Lady Macbeth notices that her husband is turning down on her. She knows she has to say and do something to change his mind. She begins to talk to him again but this time she is question his manhood. She harasses Macbeth to a point where he gets livid and wants her to stop because he is doing what a proper man would do.
Lady Macbeth uses manipulative words and background knowledge about her husband to manipulate his mind into agreeing to killing King Duncan. She is aware that she needs to push her husband to the point that he wants to kill King Duncan. Macbeth is afraid that they will fail and get caught. Lady Macbeth makes sure that he knows if he trusts in her they will not fail nor get caught.
Although Lady Macbeth did not actually murder King Duncan, she produced the plan and the negativity that led up to the King’s death. If she had not questioned her husband’s manhood, and pushed him to the point where he felt like he had to kill King Duncan to prove to his wife that he was a man the murder would not have
