Lady Macbeth is a multifaceted character, due to her ambition to be queen, manipulation of Macbeth and the mental consequences she faces.
Ambition to make Macbeth king and herself queen, provides insight on Lady Macbeth’s personality. Upon hearing the prophecy of Macbeth to be king, her ambition consumes her and she summons the dark spirits to “unsex” her. She believes that in order to carry out the sinful deeds she is about to commit, the spirits must “take her milk for gall”. Breasts and milk symbolises nurturing hence she views this as a feminine weakness and wants to trade it for masculinity. Alternatively, Lady Macbeths dismisses her chance to kill King Duncan as he resembles her father, therefore insinuating she is not as callous as she appears to be. Through her consciousness and unconsciousness she is plagued by hallucinations. She wonders if her hands will “ne’er be clean” as they are covered in “damn’d spots” of blood and she smells the “smell of blood still”. After her goal had been achieved, the guilt from what she has done floods her mind, rendering her to insanity. As well as the loss of her mind, she loses her only love. Now that Macbeth is in power, she is superfluous to him. He no longer requires her guidance and makes decisions without her. Not happy with her current state of life; Lady Macbeth commits suicide with no final words to Macbeth.
In conclusion, Lady Macbeth was neither only good nor only evil but a character with multiple sides to her personality which undoubtedly led her to her demise. She was a person who had ambitious intentions, which blinded her conscience to distinguish right from
