A flag filled with white-fimbriated symmetric red cross on a blue field with a white-fimbriated counter changed saltire of red and white, it is flag of United Kingdom. The Star-Spangled Banner with red and white stripes, that is flag of United States. Fourteen horizontal stripes alternating red and white with a yellow crescent and 14-point star on a blue field, this is our National Flag, Jalur Gemilang. Jalur ( pronounced as jaa-loor) is a Malay word meaning a band or stripe of colour while Gemilang ( pronounced as geh-mee-lung) meaning bright, brilliant, resplendent or excellent. Jalur Gemilang represents the excellence of people and the nation of Malaysia in every field, no matter it’s at national or international level. Jalur Gemilang symbolises a nation and people who are hard-working, patriotic, strong, courageous and prepared to sacrifice for nation. The flag of Malaysia,Jalur Gemilang, also known as Stripes of Glory, is a combination of traditional Islamic symbols and the representation of all the states under the federation. The official name of the Malaysian flag of was announced by Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who declared the name as representing Malaysia’s goal to strive for progress and success in conjunction with the 40th National Day celebrations in 1997. The flag design consists of a blue rectangle on the top left corner having a yellow crescent and a yellow star with fourteen points and a field of red and white stripes. It consists of 14 alternate red and white stripes of equal width which represent the equal status in the federation of the 13 member states and the federal government, while the 14 points of the star represent the unity between these entities. The golden crescent moon represents Islam because it is the official religion.
The Malaysian flag is an adaptation of the flag of the Federation of Malaya. The original flag design was selected via a national competition organized by the Federal Legislative Council
