This feature reveals the author’s impression for the athletes. For instance, Bailey’s action has been described as “his long and lean body started to slice through the water like a college crew boat, making up for his muscle weakness and coordination deficits. His floppy ankles were perfect for the breaststroke, where the feet are rotated outward for maximum thrust.” This is a precise translation from the actions to the language. The trick that the language of sport played to attract the readers is the usage of the metaphors. The metaphor makes the colourless actions colourful by the imagination. In the example, Bailey’s action of slicing through the water has been compared with the college crew boat which showed the slicing but also the speed. The metaphor turns the abstract sport action into a familiar action that the reader can imagine. This also helps to make the description more clear for the readers. The delicate image of the movement of Bailey has been portrayed which reveals the appreciation from the author. However, the prestige of the sports needs to be kept.
