The pressure of meeting everyone’s expectation take a toll on the developing minds of young children. This makes sports feel like a job. The selection methods for these sports is really tough as well that most children at such an early stages of their life should enjoy the game and be carefree of the unnecessary burdens. This can prove to be really unhealthy for the developing bodies. Sometimes accidents happen in the playing field that results in severe wounds which make the small children scared to play. Jessica rightly quotes the example of Thomas Tutko, a sports teacher. He says that the children younger than 14 years are more likely to me concern about “self-preservation”. A number of children quit the sport as a whole just because of the fear of facing another injury. I can relate with Jessica point about how the children try to come up with every possible way to get themselves out of the game. I once called in sick on the day of the game because I was feeling scared and getting hurt and letting down my team members.
The real objective of sports should be to impart the value of sportsmanship and teamwork onto the children as these are the lesson that can play a huge role in developing their personalities. Nowadays these competitive sport have become all about winning and the true essence of the sports is fading away.
