Lanyon: Contemporary Art Analysis
In 1998, Lanyon created an acrylic on canvas named, ‘’The Great Heart’’. The contemporary artwork measures 44’’ by 52’’. Colors used throughout the painting are, a bright, vibrant red-orange, golden yellow, dull burgundy/brown and bits of highly pigmented red. Plant forms used in the art are beautiful, and realistic as they resemble real life flowers and leaves. The wheel with loose-looking tubes and ropes, appear to symbolize and/or describe something magical, or imaginative. There is a brown wheel with tubes and ropes, which throws me off a little.

The two images I chose for the analysis paper are Martini, Simone and Lippo Memmi, Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita (1333) and Brunelleschi, Filippo, Dome of Florence Cathedral (1420-36). The reason I chose these are because they relate to the Catholic religion in different ways. The Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita was the beginning of the Catholic art during the Gothic time period while the Dome of Florence Cathedral was not only a masterpiece of artwork it was also a breakthrough for the construction during that time and for the rest of history.…

One of the many works he did is known as Prince Albert, Prince Consort of Queen Elizabeth, which was made in the year 2013, and the medium used was oil. The size of the canvas is 72 x 60 inches and has a striking black frame that relates to paintings made years ago. In this painting you see an African-American man, standing in a position of power and security. This painting and others are part of a collection that the artist decided to call "The World Stage", where he traveled to different countries taking pictures of different people, which later he transferred to the canvas.…

Van Honthorst’s use of lines within this work of art, makes the girl seem to fade into the dark background of the image. The texture in this painting is characteristic of seventeenth century northern European art. The texture within this work of art is realistic as though what is in the painting could be touched and feel like silk on the sleeves of the dress and the feathers look like they feel soft and fluffy. There is a great range of value within this piece, the background of the painting is very dark while the girl in the painting has very pale skin making her stand out from the dark background. This image is asymmetrical, the way that the girl is seated and holding the oval portrait make the painting unbalanced, the image would be symmetrical if the girl was facing forward rather than a three-fourths view of her. The emphasis in this painting is her face and her smile, her pale face against the dark background really stand out, her rosy cheeks and big smile make it easy to spot across the room. This painting is realistic, she is proportionate and she looks like any other girl that one might see. Over all, this painting is pleasing to the eye and had a wonderful texture, and…

Located at Duke Hall on main side of campus, is a painting called “Lifetime Piled Up” by Elizabeth Cunningham. When first noting Elizabeth work, I couldn’t help but stare at the color scheme of the drawing. When first glancing at her work, I had this feeling of darkness that surrounded the drawing. As I move up from the bottom to the top of the drawing one would feel a since of light. After analyzing the artwork by it’s color scheme, I came to a conclusion (opinionated of course) that the theme was “When there is darkness there is light”. Each time a shade of dark was made there is always a strain of light that always follows it. Now I get that the drawing is just black and white but if you look towards the bottom of the picture you can really…

One of the most influential artists of the Modern Period of art was James Whistler. Whistler was an accomplished printer and painter and a brief background of the painter allows us to understand Whistler, and why more than any artist of his time, he would be attracted to Japanese woodblock prints called Ukiyo-e. It is also essential to understand the essence of Ukiyo-e, Japanese aesthetics and its migration to the Western world. Additionally, a chronological selection of Whistler’s works must be analyzed showing how he integrated the lessons he learned from his exposure to Ukiyo-e.…

The artist Jim Dine used this to represent some chaos within the painting conversely, typically hearts represent love, cohesion, unity, sensuality, and etcetera. This just stood out to me because it is an atypical meaning for a heart. This leads me to believe there is something higher a deeper meaning of what I can comprehend of this artwork. In some ways, this artwork reminds me of my artwork when I was in elementary school. I could not really color in the lines or really comprehend to colors really belong together.…

In my artwork, I created a batik landscape of Ireland, with the house on the cliff supposed to be a house similar to one on my way to church. When creating this piece, I used a piece of silk, and then dyed it with various colors, ranging from brown to green. I believe this shows the theme, as I have been to Ireland, and I have multiple connections to it, as many ancestors of mine were Irish. Also, the house in the artwork was one that I see every time I go to church. I felt the house had an older and more traditional look to it, as it was covered with dead plants, and slightly broken in. I combined both memories, and created this piece. I believe this item connects with the artist Faith Ringold, as we both used mixed media to represent something…

Andy Warhol founded the art movement called pop art, and his lifestyle and work both mocked and celebrated the world’s obsession with materiality and fame. On one side, his paintings of distorted everyday items and celebrity faces could be seen as a display for what he viewed as a culture consumed with money and being famous. On the other side, his focus on consumer goods and celebrities, and his own fame and fortune, suggest a life in celebration of the aspects of American culture that his work criticized.…

I chose to evaluate two works of art from two different time periods, one from the Baroque era and another from the Neoclassical artworks. The first piece of artwork that I chose is the "Resting Girl". This beautiful work of art was created by Francois Boucher in 1715 and is the perfect example of a late Baroque style painting which features the Rococo style. This painting is located in the Wallraf Museum in Cologne, Germany. This painting consists of oil on canvas and was the very example of applying a light romantic touch. Boucher used light and delicate colors with emphasis on the interiors which were elegant and exuded luxury.…

What makes a painting iconic? For the most part it’s the buyer, which explains why Jackson Pollock’s number 5 is worth 250 million dollars. However, normally paintings with history and a story behind them are what make them iconic, and nothing has a bigger influence than historic art. What is it about historical leaders that people admire so much? Why after so many years people still fantasies about? Historical art has great influence on societies. It has not only been used to incite revolutions against oppressors, but to also maintain oppressing governments in power. My analysis will concentrate mostly on the similarities and differences of “George Washington Crossing the Delaware” and “Napoleon Crossing the Alps”, two very influential paintings…

When analyzing art, one must understand three things: how it is made, what it is showing, and how the two create meaning. By fully understanding these things, a deeper appreciation for the artwork can be formed. How can someone know what to look for when analyzing art? Certain components like lines, colors, light, scale, and movement are a few among many to be aware of. Knowing the history of the artwork and/or the artist can hint to the meaning as well. One work of art, Laocoön and His Sons, once analyzed reveals its meaning.
