Professor Ivory 1st Play Response on “The Laramie Project”
The Laramie Project is a play / docudrama by Moises Kaufman and the member of the Tectonic Theatre Project. A film Laramie Project is based on a real life story of a young Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old was found tied to a fence where he was beaten and left for dead by two men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson on October 7, 1998.
At the beginning scene they showed how beautiful and secluded the Laramie, WY with only 26687 people living there. It changed over night after Matthew’s incident. Now the town is defined by an accident or crime. Based on transcripts of over 200 interviews with the people of Laramie, WY there is many diverse opinion and views on many different subjects on a gay equality. The movie was very powerful just to learn about hate crime and how it attracted a lot of attention from media as well as public all over the world due to his tragic death. Matthew was the type of person that was very approachable and always put his family and friends first. Even though the death of Matthew Shepard was undeserved I definitely think that some good has come out of it because it made people realize how much violence and hatred there in the world and what it can turn into. This tragedy helped the nation wake up to the fact that hate and discrimination still lives in our communities, schools and families. Mr. Dennis Shepard gave speech in tribute to his son Matthew brought tears in my eyes. I was able to connect and engage to that moment. That moment touched me so much that I couldn’t stop crying.
Over all, I think it’s a well-made play. Stories like this should be told at school because every one deserves to hear a right story. No body deserves to be treated like that. Gay and lesbians people are human just like us and are capable of such humane like us, it just happen that we are different from them in terms of sexual orientation.
