LARGE CORPORATIONS MEAN BUSINESS!

Large corporations such as Wal-Mart or Home Depot often come under criticism for putting mom-and-pop shops out of business. While this may be a valid criticism, the consumers neglect to realize that they play the biggest part in shutting these businesses down. Consumers across the country are always looking for the best deals or the lowest prices, and in most cases the larger corporations are where products can be found at the lowest price. Many small business owners and the populations of small towns dislike large corporations moving into the area because they believe it negatively effects the local economy. In reality, we should embrace large corporations moving into our communities because they boost the local economy, they lower prices on products we use every day, and they create hundreds of jobs. Some believe that large corporations harm the local economy. While this is true in some cases, studies have shown that placing a Wal-Mart in an area actually increased sales for businesses in or around the area. In a study conducted in 2002 by Jim Simmons, a retired University of Toronto geography professor, the professor states:
“We tried to see if there was a substantial sales decline in the nearby areas, but it was difficult to find,” said Mr. Simmons. “We couldn't find any situation where people lost sales or went out of business.” (Shaw, H. 2002).
This is just one of the many findings from the study. In an effort to further boost the local economies of the areas new Wal-marts are opened in, Wal-Mart has implemented a Locally Grown program that has been enacted since 2008. Pam Kohn, who is a senior vice president and general grocery merchandise manager, had this to say about the program.
"At Walmart we are committed to increasing our locally grown offerings and the number of local small farms we work with. Through this

    Wal-Mart stores serve millions of customers globally each day – and they do their best to make certain that the products on their shelves are a sign of the diverse needs and wants of their customers. Wal-Mart states they are focused on four strategies and the top one is becoming truly global. (Wal-Mart Stores Factsheets). Wal-Mart has three basic beliefs within their company: Respect for the individual, Service to their customers and Striving for Excellence. In October 2010 Wal-Mart announced an acceleration of their global commitment to sustainable agriculture. By doing this they are matching farmers with markets, reducing food waste while motivating farmers to supply their chain. Through another program they work directly with the farmers to encourage safe cultivation of seasonal vegetables in an effort to reduce waste and improve the quality.…

    In the 1990’s most families made a dollar stretch due to lower inflation changes. As gas prices sky rocketed, in the 2000’s, families felt trapped, thriftier, and scrapping for pennies to shop for groceries. Present day Wal-Mart has given all families a way around large corporations that control prices. As a result, Wal-Mart has given a second chance on living the American dream and stretching a dollar to unimaginable possibilities.     Most notable to the concerns surrounding Wal-Mart are the economic concerns. To the average citizen living relatively near the Wal-Mart, economic concerns should tip the scales in favor of Wal-Mart. The retailer maintains some of the most competitive prices on the market. Stores often sell a vast variety of good at bargain prices. Even if you do not actually shop at Wal-Mart, the mere presence of Wal-Mart lowers prices in a community.     July 2nd, 1962 Sam Walton opened the first Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas. Walmart is a name that is commonly known in every household across the United States of America. It’s right around the corner to nearly all Americans and a haven for bargain hunters, so people think. Walmart brings jobs and helps the economy when they move to the area. This is another misconception Walmart wants you to believe. Walmart actually is doing the exact opposite. Sure it creates jobs, poverty level paying jobs with less than forty hours a week and no benefits.
