Lasen And The Art Of Grade Motivation Analysis
Are grades important beyond our academic status? Does the letter’s A or F really regulate how well students complete a task? These are a few questions I wonder as a student currently being evaluated by the grading system and have been for most of my academic career. “Zen and the Art of Grade Motivation” by Liz Mandrell address these questions. In her article, Mandrell argues that eliminating the A-F grading system may sound like a great idea to her students, but she believes students need to have an incentive to perform well in school.

One day Mandrell listened to complaints from her students they felt stressed out from receiving an excessive amount of work in her class while trying to manage their other classes. She was described as the teacher who wanted what’s best for her students mainly because she was a college student herself and could relate to what her students were addressing. I agree that a grading system is needed to keep students such as myself engaged and focused on completing assignments but I don’t believe that a grade should be the main focal point for learning. In concluding the experiment Mandrell asked her student to reflex on what were their thoughts of the experiment one of the students Chris stated “I work harder and learn more when the grade is on the line” I agree with Chris I can retain more information when grades are on the line because there’s something to work towards.     I embrace Alfie Kohn’s ideology that by grading a student’s work one actually hinders the process of learning. Having three school-aged children myself, I see the effect grades have on their mindset. If they do not achieve an “A” they feel less than their peers. I also have seen instances where they will pick the easiest assignment or not bother to complete extra credit assignments for grading. Therefore, in this regard I do agree that grading does play a factor in their learning experience. However, the practicality of overcoming the mindset of a nation of people is a daunting task that may very well take years to persuade. As much as I may agree with Mr. Kohn’s ideology, I do not see this becoming mainstreamed within the educational system any time in the near future. His ideology would have to be fully embraced by the educational system for steps of improvement in grading students to take hold. This may very well take a grass roots effort from the parents and citizens themselves before ideology could be changed, which would take much time in educating the public on this subject.     An article was published in The New York Times by Max Roosevelt titled “Student Expectations Seen as Causing Grades Disputes.” The focus of this editorial was to highlight what is often seen as a disruption to grades and our educational system. Many students these days feel they are entitled to higher grades because they did what was only expected of them which do not involve the greatest effort.
