I always wanted to research a topic related to health science and medicine. My future goal is to do something related to medicine, possibly optometry. This research project was a good opportunity for me to explore a topic related to optometry. I started to think about ideas related to eyes. The topic that I was highly interested in was Laser Eye Surgery. I created a lotus diagram showing potential ideas and questions for my research project. This helped me to refine and select a final question which I do a high-quality research and find a solution to. The selected topic from the lotus diagram below is: Side effects and Improvements and the question is: How can the procedure of laser eye surgery …show more content…
be modified to prevent the potential side effects?.
There are different kinds of laser eye surgeries such as LASIK, LASEK, PRK, CK etc. I wanted to focus on a specific type of laser eye surgery as there are different types of methods performed in different surgeries. It would be hard to determine possible improvements with a wide variety of methodology. I chose to focus on LASIK eye surgery. This process of refinement helped me to finalise my research question. The final question is How can the procedure of LASIK eye surgery be modified to prevent the potential side effects?. This question is highly related to STEM as it involves Science, Technology and a bit of Engineering in different parts of the research.
After having discussions with teachers and finalising the research question, I created this mind map which shows the possible research methods and the capabilities that will be developed during this research project. This is a researchable topic as there is a specific topic focus.

Skills Developed: The first stage of my research included finding useful and trustworthy websites to gain basic background information. This source analysis helped me to consider which sources are reliable and which are not. During this process, I developed skills such as previewing the website, skim reading, decoding the information provided and reading fluently. This research process helped me to get basic and useful background information for answering the question.
Capabilities Developed: English is my second language, so this process gave me the opportunity to develop my literacy capability as I had to read and understand the information. It also helped me develop ICT Capability because I had to search for different sources of information and make use of technology as much as possible in order to obtain suitable information.
