“Until quite recently, the suburbs had not played a central or often even an explicit role in the historical analysis of southern politics and society since World War II.”(p.692)
Lassiter and Kruse are implying that the suburbs played a pivotal role, post world war two in the historical makeup of southern states. Moreover, until recently, historians never focused on the impact the suburbian culture had in the south.
3. What are the author's objectives in writing the book? …show more content…
Although the objectives in the article were not as easily portrayed as the previous article, I think this is was the author was trying to relay.
The authors objectives in this article is to mainly inform the reader of the massive role the suburbs played in the devolvement of politics and society in the south post world war two. The authors states the suburbs “provided the main locations for cold war military-industrial complexes and the power base of new Republican voters in the 1950s and 1960s. They became pivotal sites for the national battles over court-ordered busing in the 1970s and the mobilization of the Religious Right in the 1980s and
1990s.”(p.693)
4. What problem is the author addressing? Is it a good problem to investigate?
The problem, or the question being answered, is that although the historical analysis of the south used to focus on the entry of cites, rather then look into booming revolution of the suburbs, historians today are beginning to see the important role suburbs have had in the south. Yes, this is a good problem to investigate. The authors provide the reader with a somewhat clear thesis, and a good amount of evidence to back up his claim.
