“Last Man Standing: Politics Texas Style” is a dramatically captured documentary film about Texas Politics by filmmaker Paul Stekler, which focus on Texas politics, which constantly shift dominance of from past Democratic party to recently Republican party. This movie revolves around the 2002 party nominees, Patrick Rose and Rick Green is fighting for the House Seat in the district, which includes hometown of former president Lyndon Johnson, George W. American fight for governor seat from Republican Party. In 2002, Patrick Rose, who comes from reputed Princeton with a strong political background declares himself as a Democrat and seen much more confident and against his powerful down to earth Republican nominee Rick Green.
During the movie Patrick Rose is very good at campaigning whereas Rick Green has been engaged in previous election. In the start, the fight between Rose and Green doesn’t seem fair and the results were indicated much more one way rather than competing for team Green. Team Green has support of big lobbyist and famous politician such as former president George W. Bush. While Team Rose has been repeatedly turned down from local businesses until the Rose connection with unethical activities were broadcasted in news and television. Team Rose used this information to the fullest advantages which work as a lifeline to their campaign. This involvement of Rick Green on fraud case while he was working on law firm was major factor of loss for team Green. People now have shifted opinion and seem confused with their nominee. Therefore, Team Rose used this to derive donors to the campaign held different meetings with Hispanic and white culture in their different cultural way and it was successful. This movie illustrates campaign strategies and fierce between the two young nominees in which one chooses to ignore the locals and another embraces it with both hands which become the biggest win factor in the 2002 …show more content…
election. “Last Man Standing” shows that in 2002, the political divide, as in much of the nation, was between a more multi-cultural and urban Texas of the future, represented by Sanchez and Perry and the ascendant Republicans based in the growing Texas suburbs and in politically active churches (American Documentary Inc. 2004). The Democratic nominee Tony Sanchez is an oil businessman and banker who is the first Hispanic-Latino origin to get a major party ticket. On the other hand Republic nominee Rick Perry, is a first African-American mayor to run for a senate candidate. Due to the strong candidate Democrats had high hope of winning the election. Tony Sanchez was a better-looking candidate and had major odds to win the election until federal authorities’ discovered drug money on his account. Thus, the democrats dream team was pushed away and all odds were on Republican boards. The Democratic nominee Patrick Rose is an absolute fighter who wins the election in spite of very little money and being surrounded by many insecurities. Whereas Rick Green acted bland and strong throughout the election and lost at the last moment. The ability of true and honest campaign made by Team Rose was the major factor in deciding where the voters will turn. Rose was least favorite and has less support from a lobbyist, but he managed to grab the local newspaper as a donor, which also plays a vital role for his win in this election. Rick Perry was the unanimous winner in this election since Federal authorities discovered drug money on Sanchez account.
This issue led a negative campaign against him and he was the least experienced candidate who does not have any idea of running a campaign. It is shown that Perry values his personal above ideological goals and that the campaigning and political battles associated with it (The New Republic 2011). Thus, Rick Perry has already been long in politics and has lots of experience in dealing with the voters. Texas election is a most diverse and unpredictable state as it was before. Since it is considered the Red state in recent times, but great candidate still can influence the political situation in Texas. Various surveys have shown urban areas in Texas are more liberal whereas there is still a stronghold of conservatives on sub-herbs and rural Texas. A great candidate who understands rich culture, variety and boldness of Texas can influence the election in Texas no matter it's in the district or in the
senate.
