Who Is Rod Blagojevich: The Imperfect Everyman
After the people of Illinois had just seen yet another state governor sent to prison, they sought a “breath of fresh air,” (Warren) leading them to turn to Rod R. Blagojevich, the “imperfect everyman”. Blagojevich was raised by an average middle class family in West Chicago where he worked many odd jobs in order to help support his household (“Rod Blagojevich”). He was the son of a Serbian immigrant who grew up knowing no silver spoon. This gave him the drive to work hard to put himself through college and become a Cook County attorney. This drive did not end in college. With his charismatic charm and quick humor, Blagojevich eventually propelled himself to become a state congressman. Throughout his campaigns, he continuously emphasized that

“What I did to Morris Udall”: A Critique Molly Ivins wrote an apologetic piece in 1994 entitled “What I did to Morris Udall.” Ivins was a columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram when this column was published in the editorial pages of The Times. However, Ivins did not start at the top; she had to work to earn her spot. Ivins had an opportunity to earn her spot when she was assigned a job to create a political profile on Morris Udall in the New York Times Magazine, as other writers were doing for the other candidates that would be the democratic representative for the presidential elections. This writing job is what she writes about; flashing back to the time when she did who she believed to be not only a decent guy, but a great politician…

The speech of Kane campaigning for Governor is full of bias. The bias starts from the opening seconds of the movie clip and continued through the speech. The man in the beginning of the movie clip demonstrated a bias in favor of Kane becoming Governor. These biases are created by labeling Charles Kane as a “friend of the working man” who is an ally of the under paid and under fed. This same Kane campaigner offers up a negative bias towards the opponent Jim Gettys by labeling his time in office as an “evil domination”. These same negative biases are continued by Kane himself, calling Jim Gettys “downright dishonest”. All of these negative claims are being made without any supporting facts.…

Daley was a rough-tough character, Chicago rough-tough. His grammar and speaking skills did not bring the praise of teachers--far from it. He was hot-tempered, simple, devious and powerful. Many in the country may not have understood him, but Chicagoans did. Daley reflected Chicago. Daley was a product of his neighborhood. He reflected its values--loyalty to family, neighbors, old buddies, the corner grocer. Good neighbors cut their grass and don't have their TVs too loud. He was a pious man--ever faithful to his church, mom and apple pie, disturbed by public displays of immorality. But if somebody in City Hall had a chance to make some money on the sly, Daley wasn't into lecturing except perhaps for a simple one: "Don't get…

In reviewing the article, it is clear that speculation about the connection between Barack Obama's rise to the presidency and racial trend in the United States was widespread before and after his winning campaign. Obama’s political career further illustrates this segregation by serving as a reminder of the significant role of African-American political leader in U.S. culture. It is the same role that established supreme political and ethical significance in the era of civil rights movement. The leadership role that African-American politicians can opt for reminds of the rich political tradition President Obama has adopted as an African-American. It also reminds us of the adversities as well as criticism that set in when Obama tries to blend it with the general political culture in the United States. It is yet to be seen though whether Obama will be successful in his attempt. Furthermore, it needs to be…

In dispute are not the events of Polk’s career and administration, but his motives and principles. Born in North Carolina in November 1795, Polk made his life in the wilds of Tennessee as a capable lawyer and ambitious politician. Under the guidance of the influential planter-politician Andrew Jackson, Polk rose quickly in Democratic ranks and Southern social circles. In the 1820s and 1830s, as Jackson and Martin Van Buren forged a modern partisan organization out of Jefferson’s loose Democratic coalition, Polk served in the United States House of Representatives, seeing to the Democratic agenda with impressive diligence. In December 1835, the Tennessee Democrat was elected Speaker of the House, a position he enjoyed for four years. As the most powerful man in the lower chamber, Polk oversaw and aided the passage of the infamous “gag rule” that prohibited all…

In 1990, beginning with California, Colorado, and Oklahoma, many states embarked on term-limit movements that resulted in the adoption of term limits for state legislatures. This was done in response to what many believed was widespread legislative tenure becoming standard with representatives securing lifelong careers in politics. Throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s eighteen more states would pass term limit legislation through the initiative process resulting in the restriction of the number of terms that elected representatives may serve in office (Bowman 161). Although such legislation would be repealed in 6 of those states, either by the courts or the legislature, rarely have such measures been supported by so many American voters.…

In her essay, “We’re Only Confirming California’s Flaky Image”, Anita Creamer explains why the rest of the country views Californians as “flakes”. Her prime example of this is the 2003 gubernatorial election, where Californians elected body builder and reality TV star Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor. Californians put in office someone with absolutely no political experience in office not because of the merit of his policies, but because of the entertainment value he offered. “They blame attack ads for alienating them and the candidates themselves for offending them. The truth is, they're simply not interested because they’re not entertained. The ordinary day-to-day developments of politics and current events bore them senseless” (Creamer 433).…

Jack Abramoff was born on 1958 to an upper middle class family. He graduated with a degree in English Literature and Opera at Brandeis University; it is also here where he began his political venture. He was the head of a statewide college Republic group that played big factor for Ronald Reagans winning of Massachusetts. This was the first time that a Republican president had won Massachusetts since 1953. He was later elected to be the national chairman of the college of Republicans. Under him, the organization became the largest in the nation. He was the head of the grassroots lobby organization under President Reagan. Abramoff’s political influence was widely recognized by many, and one of his several achievements was that he was able to get major initiatives passed through the congress despite his few years in service.…

Texas Politics (2006) states that, “Scholars of the U.S. presidency often make the argument that the president's chief power is the power to persuade – to use the attention automatically paid the president to create what Teddy Roosevelt called a bully pulpit to build support for their priorities. It is even more crucial for the Texas Governor to exercise this kind of power. With limited real executive power placed directly in the governor's hands, those who occupy the governor's mansion in Austin must find indirect and informal ways to build on their limited formal powers. Governors must be able to utilize their public position as a figurehead – as the symbolic leader the public most readily identifies with state government – to influence politics and policy. Using personality and image in public media to build and maintain the loyalty of both voters and powerful political elites is the key to exercising this influence.” which, interestingly enough, displays a method of increasing the power of the governor. In the same way the United States president would garner support from citizens to get a favorable Congress elected, the governor must use the fame that comes with their position to persuade the public to vote for certain cabinet members that share their goals and will help them accomplish their agenda. The…

The current Texas Governor, Rick Perry, announced his candidacy for President on August 13, 2011, and looks like he is in line for the number one spot in the 2012 Presidential Campaign. Perry, a committed conservative, grew up in a small, rural town called Paint Creek, where he worked on the family farm, played football and was a dedicated Boy Scout. Perry actually went to Texas A&M University and was an Aggie Yell Leader for the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets, graduating with the class of ‘72. Perry then enlisted in the Air Force, but was honorably discharged 5 years later with the rank of Captain. Perry went back to his home town and ended up marrying his high school sweetheart, and a few short years after had a son and daughter. After Perry went on to serve three terms in the House of Representatives, he took the spot of Agriculture Commissioner and served two terms there. Perry then ran for Lieutenant Governor of Texas and two years later became Governor, when George W. Bush resigned to become President. Perry is now following in Bush’s footsteps once more, trying to become President of the United States. Perry wants to open more job opportunities, control spending and cut taxes.…

An individual in a position of authority who I admire is former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. He inspires me because he does not fall into the stereotypical form of a politician. In his early years as an immigrant in the United States, he made a career out of bodybuilding. He is of Austrian descent, and came to America in 1968. His bodybuilding career ultimately led him over to pursue a career in Hollywood. After the successful completion of many hit films, such as The Terminator, Total Recall, and Conan, Schwarzenegger decided to switch over to a career in politics. In his political career, he represented California as the state governor. (Biography.com Editors).…
