1. Explain what “Living Apart Together” is, and give an outline of the different views presented in text 2 and 3.
“Living Apart Together”, also know as LAT is a relatively new concept. The whole idea is that a couple, both those in long-time relationships and the officially married, is living in separate homes. They could live on different floors of the same building, down the block from one another or in different neighbourhoods. In that way it gives both part of the relationship an opportunity to decide where to live and how to decorate the home. There are many pros and cons in the debate about LAT.
The second text is called “Home Alone Together” written by Jill Brooke. In the text there are listed some arguments for and against LAT. One of the arguments is by Dr. Scott Haltzman, who is against LAT. His opinion of LAT. is that if you are living apart you are losing some important things in marriage. One of the important things in marriage is to learn how to live with a person and to give that person a piece of yourself. Dr. Scott Haltzman also means that if you are living apart you are losing an opportunity to learn selflessness as well as giving and forgiving. Another argument in the text is by Professor Popenoe who is also against LAT. He worries that LAT might affect the ability to form long-term relationships. A third view on LAT is by Judye Hess who sees LAT relationships as a potential solution instead of getting divorced.
In the third text: “Just What Modern Romance Needs: “Living Apart Together”” Gary Picariello lists arguments for and against LAT but mostly against. One of his reasons for the concept is that when you are living apart you appreciate each other more when you do get to see each other. However he is also augmenting against the concept. He says that if you go into a relationship you have to compromise and commit to a person. If you are not good at those things and are living apart from your partner
