WEEKLY REPORT – LATHE MANUFACTURING LAB (MEFB 121) GROUP 3 REV NO : 000 DATE : 11 NOVEMBER 2011

2. PURPOSE The purpose of this activity are to verifies various type of lathe and their basic construction. Apart from that, it also make us to be familiar for cutting and turning process In lathe. 3. EQUIPMENT Less tool are required to perform lathe activity. This is due to lathe machine itself provide a lot of multifunction features that can obtain various desired outcome for a workpiece. 3.1) Vernier caliper We used vernier caliper to measure the size of the object .Beside that ,it can be used to measure the length of the object, which specific size is 100mm and 25mm in diameter. 3.2) Lathe Machine

A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the workpiece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation.Lathes are used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, and glassworking. Lathes can be used to shape pottery, the best-known design being the potter's wheel. Most suitably equipped metalworking lathes can also be used to produce most solids of revolution, plane surfaces and screw threads or helices. Ornamental lathes can produce three-dimensional solids of incredible complexity. The material can be held in place by either one or two centers, at least one of which can be moved horizontally to accommodate varying material lengths. Other workholding methods include clamping the work about the axis of rotation using a chuck or collet, or to a faceplate, using clamps or dogs.

The integration of milling into turning environments and of turning into milling environments and of turning into milling environments, begun with live tooling for lathes and the occasional use of mills for turning operations, led to new class of machine tools, multitasking machines. There is lots of type of milling for example vertical milling machines (VMC) have a vertical spindle, spindle, similar to the drill press, but witch an X-Y table that permits positioning the work. CNC milling machines are programmed with a set of commands called G-codes and use CAT (V-Flange), BT, or HSK tooling. Gantry milling machines are used with large workpieces. They allow for articulation of the spindle as needed for five-axis and six-axis milling machines.…

Both of the jobs are requiring one thousand furniture pieces. SAF has the capabilities to produce the units that are being requested from both companies with the current production facility. However, the machine requires the operation of a special lathe by a skilled worker. The lathe is basically a machine tool that rotates the product on its axis to perform different operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation, facing, turning, with tools that are put onto the work piece to facilitate an object with balance. This lathe is used to create a specific piece that will complete a part for the…

Conventional machining usually involves changing the shape of a workpiece using an implement made of a harder material. Using conventional methods to machine hard metals and alloys means increased demand of time and energy and therefore increases in costs; in some cases conventional machining may not be feasible. Conventional machining also costs in terms of tool wear and in loss of quality in the product owing to induced residual stresses during manufacture. With ever increasing demand for manufactured goods of hard alloys and metals, such as Inconel 718 or titanium, more interest has gravitated to non-conventional machining methods. Conventional machining can be defined as a process using mechanical (motion) energy. Non-conventional machining utilises other forms of energy. The three main forms of energy used in non-conventional machining processes are as follows :…
