One time in Hawaii, in 1888, there was a small village just next to a little beach. Not far from the village, there was a huge “lava pit.” Scientists believed that it was just a volcano that had formed underground and only the opening at the top could be seen from the surface. The lava pit had always been filled with lava, and people wondered if it would ever erupt.
For many years, tourists have visited Hawaii and come to see and take pictures of the lava pit. Unfortunately, many people have fallen into the lava pit.
Then, one day, in 1918, black smoke started billowing from the lava pit. All of the tourists and visitors kept taking pictures, until someone yelled, “I think it’s going to erupt!” People started running as fast
as they could back to the village.
Moments later, the ground started to shake, and boom! The lava pit erupted!
The lava went everywhere and started flowing into the village. The people in the village didn’t know what to do. The had to think of something fast. The lava was heading towards the village at full speed!
Then someone had an idea: “We should get the lava to go to the beach. Then it will flow into the water and we’ll be safe.”
Everybody thought this was a great idea. People started collecting big rocks and building a wall with them. The wall curved down to the beach where the people wanted the lava to go. Somebody stood behind the wall with a hose, just in case any lava came through. They finished the wall just in time as the lava had reached the wall. Then the lava started heading towards the beach. The people had done it!
That night, the village hosted a party to celebrate their victory. Today, the lava pit is still a popular tourist attraction; people are just a little bit more careful.
