Leadership Style
Different types of leadership styles exist in work environments. There are advantages and disadvantages within each leadership style. The culture and goals of an organization determine which leadership style fits the firm best. Some companies offer several leadership styles within the organization. Organizations need strong leadership and strong management for optimal effectiveness. According to Robbins, we need leaders today to challenge the status quo, create visions of the future, and inspire organizational members to want to achieve the visions (Robbins, pp. 368). According to the Houston Chronicle, there are essentially five different types of leadership styles, 1. Laissez-Faire leader produces no leadership or supervision efforts from managers, which can lead to poor production, lack of control and increasing costs. 2. Motivating employees and making them feel valued. There is no better way to make people feel valued than to ask them, genuinely, for their advice. Employees can be recognized for their efforts but this is not as effective in motivating employees as involving them in important decisions. Employees who play a part in deciding what to do feel a much greater amount of ownership over making it happen. According to wise Geek, the participative leadership style allows for the development of additional leaders who can serve the organization at a later date. Because leaders who favor this style encourage active involvement on the part of everyone on the team, people often are able to express their creativity and demonstrate abilities and talents that would not be made apparent otherwise (Tatum,
