Professional Development Plan
The professional development plan is a blueprint for success and outlines specific information necessary to help individuals grow as leaders and individuals. The purpose of this development plan is to identify strengths, skills, and weaknesses of each team member of Learning Team D using the specific behavioral style identified in the DISC assessment. My role as manager of the team is to address the characteristics of the team and myself and create a development plan that is instrumental in assisting each team member with her respective career goals and providing the necessary …show more content…
resources to achieve her full potential.
DISC Assessment
DISC is a personal behavioral tool which assesses the communication, productivity, and teamwork skills of individuals.
This tool provides insight into four different personality types- dominant, cautious, steadiness, and interactive. According to Disc Profile (1997-2010), "The DISC Model of Behavior was first proposed by William Mouton Marston, a physiological psychologist with a Ph.D. from Harvard. His work focused on directly observable and measurable psychological phenomena. He was interested in using practical explanations to help people understand and manage their experiences and relationships. Marston theorized that the behavioral expression of emotions could be categorized into four primary types, stemming from the person 's perceptions of self in relationship to his or her environment. Marston labeled these four types as Dominance (D), Inducement (I), Submission (S), and Compliance (C)” (History of DISC). William Marston did not develop the DISC Assessment. In 1940, Walter Clark procured the model of William Moulton Marston and established the initial DISC …show more content…

Individual Assessments
The result of the assessments taken by each team member provides an insight into the individual behavioral style and traits that each person will likely to exhibit. The traits of each behavioral style will determine how well Learning Team D will work together as a group. Lauren has the dominance behavioral style which suggests a need to control. She is a high achiever and is driven by goals and objectives. Lauren is a go-getter and is in her element when in charge of the group and the situation.
Three members of the team, Kelley, Loretta, and Karla are cautious which means each one of them has her way of doing things in a specific manner and order. They are detail-oriented, taskmasters but tend to work at a slow pace. They may also over analyze and are skeptical in their approach to most situations. Their strengths include an eye for detail and accuracy. They are dependable and independent thinkers who will ask a lot of questions.
Laura has a behavioral style of steadiness which suggests she is a nurturer by nature. She is an excellent listener, is approachable, and people enjoy being in her presence. Laura is the definitive team player who goes along with the status quo. She does not like change and will not take too many risks. Her goal is to maintain her composure at all times, have a plan in place, and follow through with every task assigned to her.
My behavioral style is interactive which suggests I am enthusiastic, fully engaged in the action, and focus on having fun. Those who are interactive like to be where the action is and thrive on acknowledgements and compliments. They want to be recognized for their contributions and tend to be attention seekers. My style suggests I tend to be a warm individual who has tremendous people skills, impeccable communication skills (both written and oral), and can easily influence others.
Group Assessment
With the various behavioral styles and traits that encompass Learning Team D, it is important for each team member to personally analyze their strengths, weaknesses, and skillset so that we can work harmoniously as a team. Because three members of the team have a cautious behavioral style, their focus will be on facts, and they will question every aspect of each assignment before proceeding. They are very task-oriented, and the group dynamic suggests that every portion of every assignment will have to be clarified, and an agreement reached prior to making a final decision. The other team member who has a dominant style may share traits with those who have a cautious style and be task-oriented and focus solely on the results.
The final two members are the cheerleaders of the group and will seek to inject some fun and joy into each project. They are the ones to rally the team, but the others will have to keep the team on track. The goal for the group is to allow each member to inject their personality into the projects and assignments, ensure each member is properly represented, and not have one person lead the team. Every team member is a leader within the group and possess many leadership traits and qualities.
The Plan
As the leader of the team, the plan is to employ the strengths of each team member using their behavioral styles as a guide.
Because the majority of the team members have a cautious behavioral style, it is to my advantage to have these individuals break down each assignment and project from the beginning to the end. They are also task-oriented which will bode well for each project. Their strengths are attention to detail and follow through. Lauren has the dominance behavioral style and likes to be in charge that will help to keep the group on track. Those with the cautious behavioral style tend to work at a slow pace and are extremely over analytical. As the leader of the team, my plan is to encourage my team members and recognize them for their achievements. Laura, who is supportive, will provide the encouragement the team needs to complete each task. She will also be strong on follow through and following up with each team member to ensure they are on track to complete each assignment. She is the most people-oriented of the group, so I will rely on her to maintain stability and balance in the group. Each team member will lead a project or assignment each week because each person will share some of the four behavioral styles depending on the nature of the assignments. Each team member will explore the behavioral styles of her fellow team members to understand each person fully on how they think, act, and interact with one another. This will enable each person to
respect the differences of each behavioral style and incorporate some of these traits into their behavioral styles to be knowledgeable and tolerant.
According to Disc Insights (1985-2014), "The DISC Personality Profile identifies patterns of behavior and can be used to implement solutions for maximizing an individual’s strengths and minimizing weaknesses. The DISC Assessment will provide an impartial, constructive language to discuss the ways that people think, act, and interact. The DISC Assessment will be used to strengthen communication skills, build leadership abilities and diffuse interpersonal conflict, and increase performance, productivity and motivation” (Para. 7-8).
Conclusion
Learning Team D is a multi-talented team with dominant personalities and overachievers. The behavioral styles of each team member work well together to attain the goals and objectives of the team. The behavioral traits of each team member are conducive for a team that is cohesive and respectful of the differences of each person on the team. The professional development plan is the foundation for Team D to build upon and become a better team. Monitoring the progress of the group, providing constructive feedback to each member, and consistent followup will ensure the team is successful.
