Abstract: This paper will detail the profile of Jim Skinner, CEO of McDonalds Corporation, and why he is an effective and successful leader. From his humble beginnings as a McDonalds Restaurant Manager trainee, he formed a work ethic and vision that would lead him to become one of the most influential and productive CEO’s of today’s time. This paper will also touch on Mr. Skinner’s leadership characteristics and how globalizing his company in a multicultural setting has kept McDonalds a competing contender in today’s most lucrative organizations.
Jim Skinner, 66, has been the Chairman and CEO of McDonalds Corporation since 2004. He is also the director of Walgreens Company and Illinois tool works Incorporated. (Forbes, 2011) Skinner served a stint in the U.S. Navy and returned home to Illinois to work as a Restaurant Manager Trainee for a local McDonald’s as well as attending Roosevelt University focusing on business in Liberal Arts. Since 1971, Skinner has risen up the managerial chain holding positions which include director of field operations, market manager, Limited Japan Manager, and eventually becoming chief operating officer of the McDonalds Restaurant Group with concentration in Asia, Middle East, and Africa and Latin America. His vast experience in McDonalds from the forefront of dealing with the customer to overseeing day to day operations has prepared him to lead the company toward greater opportunity. The first McDonald’s opened in San Bernardino in 1940. Brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald began to franchise the restaurants in 1953 on the west coast and also went into partnership with Ray Croc, a multimixer shake seller, to franchise the restaurants around the nation.
