Leaders In Lord Of The Flies

Being a leader is generally defined as a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal. What the definition doesn’t entail is the characteristics of a good leader. In our society, as well as the world, there are two types of leaders; the one that serves for the greater good of mankind and the one that is infatuated with their own self-gain. In the book, Lord of Flies by William Golding, multiple examples of the two types of leaders are portrayed throughout the novel.
The sake of society falls upon the one chosen to lead. The two most obvious leaders within the novel are Ralph and Jack. In the beginning of the book, Ralph is chosen by majority to lead the others. Ralph’s primary goal is to get everyone rescued, but
to do so he and the others need to keep a fire burning so that smoke can be seen. Rather than keeping a fire going, Jack decides hunting is more important, which shows that Jack puts his own interests above the greater good for all. In a way, Ralph’s leadership can signify a democracy and Jack’s a dictatorship.
