Lord Of The Flies Ralph Leadership

When chaos strikes a group of people they look for a person. Not just a person, they look for a leader. They look for someone who can inspire the masses. The definition of a leader is the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. There are many great leaders in the country’s history that took charger during the challenging times. Leader like Abraham Lincoln during the civil war or Ronald Regan during the Cold War. The same sense of a need of a leader in our history is the same feeling in the book the Lord of the Flies. A group of boys are stranded on an island and no one knows where they are. This challenge causes a need for a leader. The group decided on one leader but there are three different people who display different types of successful leadership.
The first person who displayed successful leadership is Ralph.
Ralph is the elected leader of the group. He continues throughout the whole book to try to keep the order in the book. He first understands that he needs to set up a structure of rules to allow for the group of boys to remain civilized. The first great leadership skill that Ralph has is that he compromises. Ralph is a compromiser. The smartest compromises makes is that he instead of having Jack be upset about not being elected leader he makes Jack be the leader of the hunters. This would allow Jack and Ralph to have a good relationship until the middle of the book where having Jack be the head hunter would cause a split in the
civilization. The second person who displayed successful leadership skills in Jack. Jack had a different type of leadership quality. Jack leads by fear. He feeds off the fear from the made up the beast. There has been many times in the history of the world has this tactic been used. Hitler used it before World War Two during the economic troubles in Germany. Hitler blamed the Jews for the economic problems and this caused a fear which made the German People look to Hitler as the leader who would lead their country out of depression it was in. Jack uses the fear of the beast to bring the group around him. He promises that he is going catch the beast and protect the boys and the boys buy in and follow him. Even though he leads by fear and the boys keep following him even though they are becoming more uncivilized they are willing to trade off civility for protection. The third person who shows good leadership skills is Simon. Simon is the only boy out of the three that was not a leader of a group. Simon is a quiet boy who leads by example. On a football team there are two types of leaders. The first type of the vocal. These are the types like Jack. These leader yell to pump up the group and to state their dominance. The second type of leader it someone like Simon. He is the leader by example. Simon did what he is told and doesn’t question it. He keeps the values of civilization which helps the younger boys out to allow them to stay calm. He leads under the leader. He listens to the leader and show the masses how to live in this new society that the boys have created. There are many ways to be a great leader. You see it though out all of history and in the book. To be a leader you need to look at the problem at hand and do what you can to solve that problem. The three boys solved there problems differently. Ralph through compromise, Jack through fear, and Simon through leading by example. Each of these boy exemplified the definition of leadership. They were a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country
