 1. How would you explain Rex’s leadership style interms of one or more of the approaches discussed in the book?
If we want to explain Rex’s leadership style interms of the Blake & Mouton leadership style, we see that Rex’s leadership style is in 9.1 part of the Blake & Mouton model which is called Authoritarian.
Authoritarian or Produce or Perish Leadership – High Production/Low People:
Also known as Compliance Leaders, people in this category believe that employees are simply a means to an end. Employee needs are always secondary to the need for efficient and productive workplaces. This type of leader is very autocratic, has strict work rules, policies, and procedures, and views punishment as the most effective means to motivate employees.
Here we see that Rex is very loyal to the company and works hard to follow the company policies.
On the other hand, we see that Rex is oblivious to the needs of employees and has authority over them.
So we see that Rex’s style of leadership completely matches with authoritarian style in Blake and Mouton’s managerial grid.

 2. What advice would you give Rex to improve his approach to leadership?
He has to change his authoritarian style to the Team Leadership style which is the best style in this model.
Team Leadership – High Production/High People
According to the Blake Mouton model, this is the best managerial style. These leaders stress production needs and the needs of the people equally highly.
The premise here is that employees understand the organizations purpose and are involved in determining production needs. When employees are committed to, and have a stake in the organization’s success, their needs and production needs coincide. This creates a team environment based on trust and respect, which leads to high satisfaction and motivation and, as a result, high production.

    Autocratic leadership, also known as authoritarian leadership is a leadership style characterized by individual control over all decisions and little input from group members. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and rarely accept advice from followers. Autocratic leadership involves absolute, authoritarian control over a group. It can also be derived as a dictator, domineering and aggressive behaviour. An autocratic leadership can be beneficial in some circumstances such as that decisions have to be made quickly without consulting anyone, also when projects sometimes require strong leadership so that things can get accomplished quickly and effectively.
