What is leadership? Is there a catchall definition to describe what leadership is? For my review, I have chosen an article from Forbes contributor Kevin Kruse titled “What is Leadership?” In this article Mr. Kruse initially diverges from the main topic of answering what is to answer what is not leadership. Afterwards, he examines leadership definitions from some notable business thinkers then gives his definition. Beginning with what he states is not leadership, Kruse outlines what are commonly misconstrued ideas of what leader is. The first concept touched on is that leadership has nothing to do with one’s seniority or even their position in a company. “Leadership doesn’t automatically happen when you reach a certain pay grade (Kruse, 2013). ” Anyone can be a leader and from the assigned readings in this class I’ve learned that leadership can be regarded as a trait, an ability, a behavior, a relationship, or a process (Northouse, 2012, p. 9). Reading further though this article, I gained a clearer understanding of what Kruse meant; the basic definition of leadership need not include attributes. Referring back to the Northouse’s textbook’s definition, there is no mention of traits or attributes, showing an even further correlation between the author of our class textbook and Kruse. To
