BATTLE OF CAPE MATAPAN
This was a large scale Naval action which was happened after the twenty-five years of the time of that era. At the end of March 1941 under the pressure of German, the Italian fleet planned to launch an attack on British fleet. The purpose of that attack was to stop convoys supplying to the British expeditionary forces in Greece. Before this attack happened, he was able to analyze the situation with the Italy entry to the war and capitulation of France. They captured airfield in western Crate and that were benefitted to them for future operations. After a week of heavy fighting, British commanders suggested to withdrawn. So the evacuation was carried out and Cunningham’s ships suffered a lot of damages. But he was determined that “Navy must not let the army down” and as a Naval officer shown the dedication, confidence, commitment and accountability of his works. Though the Army Generals were feared to evacuate and loosing of ships, he never got back. Because of that attitude of him and his men 85% of men in Create were rescued.(out of 22000 men 16500 rescued ) and he lost three Cruisers and six destroyers. The operational level leadership lessons learnt from the battle of Create can be summarized as follows.
a. Personal Touch. He demonstrated that his personal touch with the men of his fleet, talking to him, walking among them, boosting morale by his presence.
