Leadership in History Throughout history there have been countless inspiring leaders due to acts of courage, and pure bravery. In this essay I will discuss the traits and qualities and of some of my favorite documents written by some of these regarded leaders in history. Such as, Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and Chief Seattle’s 1854 Speech. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15th, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. King had a seismic impact on race relations in the Unites States and was one of the main leaders of the Civil Rights movement. In early 1963, King and his followers were demonstrating a nonviolent protest which led to the arrest of Dr. King. During his imprisonment king wrote a letter in the response of a letter written by eight white Alabama clergymen that was posted in the newspaper a few days earlier titled, A Call for Unity. This letter expressed the belief that the fight against racial segregation should be fought solely in the courts and not in the streets. King wrote in his letter that direct actions must be necessary to achieve true civil rights. His letter would later be published and named, Letter from Birmingham Jail. The letter that king wrote in that jail cell is a great example of how King is a great leader. The leadership that king shows is, not to be afraid of anything and to stand up for your rights in a nonviolent manner. King set goals for himself and his followers and stopped at no cost to complete those goals and that’s why he is a successful leader and known as one of the most influential and inspiring individuals in American history. On page 336, King says that he is in Birmingham because there is injustice in the town. This shows that King will face any kind of problem head on and face it in person. He was here to spread his word of equality in a nonviolent way and that is what he done. Martin is a true
