Lean Six Sigma: Analysis of its use within the Supply Chain of Oil &
Gas Construction projects in Western Australia.
TOPIC BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE
A high performing supply chain that is both efficient and reliable is a major contributor to the success of a construction project (Erikson 2010, 394). For high levels of performance to be attained there must be “continuous improvement in all facets of the supply chain ” (Senthil and Bharathi
2011, 8). Without continual improvement and effective management the supply chain will cause construction projects to fail as they will not “finish on time, within budget, or at a quality level accepted by the customer” (Al-Aomar 2012, 300).
The need to analyse the application of Lean Six Sigma to the supply chain of oil and gas construction projects in Western Australia is due to the region possessing multiple gas fields. The infrastructure and requirements of developing these gas fields is complex with their construction requiring sophisticated supply chains that are required to operate in difficult geographic and environmental conditions (Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association 2014).

    Lean Six Sigma

The extraordinary results firms such as General Electric, Toyota, Motorola and many others have achieved using either one of them have encouraged many other companies to follow their illustration. As a result, a majority of firms have either a Lean or Six Sigma program in operation. But, using either one of them by their self has limitations: Six Sigma will remove defects but will not deal with the question of how to optimize process flow; and the Lean principles leave out the advanced statistical tools often necessary to accomplish the process capabilities needed to be truly ‘lean’. As a result, most companies consider both methodologies as complementing each other and while each method can effect in remarkable improvement, utilizing these two methods concurrently holds the promise of being able to address all types of process problems with the most appropriate toolkit (Bertels, PP2). Mr. Bertels says, “For example, inventory reduction not only requires reducing batch sizes and linking operations by using Lean, but also minimizing process variation by utilizing Six Sigma tools.”…

Lean Six Sigma approach is recognized widely and has been implemented predominately in manufacturing rather than other industries. To illustrate the point, this paper draws attention to the adoption of Lean Six Sigma in various industries with a case study. The combination of Lean tools and Six Sigma methodology is used to improve the process and quality by eliminating the variations and creating workflow in a process. The hypothesis of this study was that the Six Sigma technique can be used along with lean tools in order to improve process and quality in any area of industries. The review of case study discovered the use of DMAIC method as Six Sigma approach along with lean tools to achieve the goals of improving process and quality. As a finding, how Lean Six Sigma achieves its target in improving process and quality and how it is adoptable to various industries were shown.…
