Lee Kuan Yew insists that bilingualism is impossible and that English must take precedence over Chinese.
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said Mandarin is important but it remains a second language in Singapore. So parents must be realistic in their expectations.
Mr Lee was alluding to the furore which erupted after media reports that the Education Ministry was looking at whether to reduce the weighting of the Mother Tongue Language, reports that have since been debunked.
Speaking at a dialogue following a Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in East and Southeast Asia, Mr Lee said no one can master two languages at the same level.
So if parents want their kids to have a good grasp of Mandarin, a lot of time and effort is needed.
Mr Lee also spoke about his struggles in learning the language.
He said his motivation for learning Mandarin is a matter of pride and not economic reasons.
And because he learnt it as an adult, there were several hurdles to overcome, such as nailing the different intonations.
Though he can now speak it fluently, he remains modest about his command of the language.
MM Lee said: “If my English gets an A, then my Mandarin gets a C, it can’t be helped. No two languages are the same. No one, including translators, can say their command of two languages is the same.(To be inserted in 1st & 2nd speaker scripts.)

If we do not put ultimate focus on English as a language, together with the other fundemental key subjects such as Math and Science, what makes you think that they will be able to cope and learn their mother tongue well,it will just add as a another stress factor for the child.

It is impossible to learn and flourish under a stressful enviroment, and having mother tongue stay is creating stress to students who just are not able to cope, why,is the government, who wants the best for Gen.Y,doing this?
If the downsides of mother tongue is outweighing it's benefits, why are we still clinging on to

More children who use English as 2nd language are attending schools that use English as a 1st Language. This could be a problem as some children may struggle with the English Language. Many schools have multilingual staff on board to help non-English speaking parents, as communication is vital. However during school hours children are encouraged to only speak English, not their own 1st language, only if it is absolutely necessary.…

Language is speaked in many forms. Some people may grow up learning one language but choose to speak another and others might simply grow up speaking only one language. As Chinese myself, I have been speaking Chinese for my whole life. My first language was Chinese and although I’ve learned to speak Japanese and English throughout my childhood, however, Chinese have become one of the most common languages I speak daily. Similar to me, my parents also prefer to speak Chinese although they’ve been living in America for the past ten years. They are not exactly so called American, but they have gotten use to the life style in America that they understand nearly perfect English. But my parents still speak to me in Chinese when I call them to ask about their days. They tell me about their work, their days, their lives in Chinese and they speak to their friends to their native language. One time I got curious and I tried to have a conversation with them in English. They started alright, speaking English with their deep Chinese accent, but before I realized it, it turned into Chinese conversation. I asked them the reason behind this logic and they told me that it’s because they couldn’t seem to find the right English words. I wondered for a second what this meant and I finally realized that it’s because they are not familiar with English language like they are with Chinese. Although they have been living in America for a long time and have mastered English language, they choose to speak Chinese freely because they feel…

English is fast becoming the dominant means by which the world is able to communicate. It is being referred to as the global language as it is seen as a common means for interaction between different countries. This new phenomena can be seen in a positive light because the use of English as a common language brings efficiency and greater understanding. Nevertheless there some people who believe that this fact has changed and that now it is more important to learn Spanish and Mandarin than the English language. Anzaldua dealt with this issue on a consistent basis in her school life. Though she was not told to lose her Spanish ways, she felt that speaking English would not allow her to express herself. Especially in the American culture, it was necessary for her to learn English to communicate with her peers. Furthermore, the English language is the number one lingua franca no other comes close.…

A study of a three year old Chinese girl named Jasmine, focused on the semantics of her learning English as a second language. She was the only participant in the study who was learning a second language. Others in the study consisted of the teachers, interns, children in the class, and the observers of the study. Her native language was Chinese, which is not very similar to English at all. She came into her preschool program not knowing any other language but Chinese and also having a past bad experience at a prior preschool.…

Abortion is not a ‘women’s only’ issue. Beginning at conception, every pregnancy involves two or more bodies. Typically a man does not have a role in this process. Here we see three short stories that show the readers a range of abortion situations. “Hills Like White Elephants”, Ernest Hemingway shows the readers a woman struggle to make a decision wether she could keep this unborn child or keep her male dominated the relationship. “Good People”, David Foster Wallace is about two young Christian couple who are concerned with ensuring they are making the right decision between abortion and keeping the unborn child. “Black Man and White Woman in a Dark Green Rowboat”, Russell Banks is about a young white woman who decided to get an abortion…

First I begin with the belief that every student can learn if you use their Native language instead of English. As teachers we need to try and reach our students through a variety of ways and language is one way. But again the younger generation and I need to learn our language because we are stuck between not being fluent in English or Navajo. Integrating our language into our classrooms with English will help students become proficient English speakers. It is another way children could grasp the different content areas by relating it to our…

    Mother Tongue Summary

From Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue”, it is evident that language has an effect on our lives. Language defines the type of person I am generally and it has had an effect on my choices as well as my lifestyle. Language has become my way of seeing life in a different perspective. In “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan discusses the many ways in which the language that she was taught affected her life. I can definitely relate to Tan’s essay because I too come from a bilingual home. Like Amy Tan, I have intelligent immigrant parents and I am their main avenue of communication with people who don’t understand them. I believe the main idea of Tan’s “Mother Tongue” is to stress that just because someone cannot speak the English language to perfection does not in any way make him or her less intelligent than someone who is born in this country and understands and speaks English fluently. However, what makes us different is that it is rare to find two people who speak the exact same English. Although Tan and I both helped our parents and came from non-traditional homes, Tan came from a Chinese family while I come from a Nigerian family. We both had similar ideas about language playing a major role in our families, and it was also a big challenge for both of us while we were raised by immigrant parents who spoke “limited English”. Indeed, just as language can be the glue that binds individuals into a community, language is a double-edged sword that also bears the power to alienate an individual from a community.…

A lot of people refer to mother tongue ‘influence’ on English, as mother tongue ‘influenza’ and have a good laugh at others’ expense. Of all the influences, the mother tongue influence is the most difficult to get rid of, or so we believe! In my Verbal Ability sessions, I invariably come across people who carry around an inferiority complex, just because they speak English with a mother tongue influence.…
