This positive response from people in favor of the legalization of marijuana will likely be apparent on this upcoming election day. I am in favor or legalizing recreational marijuana use in Massachusetts because as Major Neil Franklin,a former police officer and current head of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), said, “The legalization of marijuana is good for law enforcement, good for families, and good for our communities”( ). Marijuana does not have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. Additionally, in some cases medical marijuana is the only thing that works on patients. “Take the case of Charlotte Figi, who I met in Colorado. She started having seizures soon after birth. By age 3, she was having 300 a week, despite being on seven different medications. Medical marijuana has calmed her brain, limiting her seizures to 2 or 3 per month” ( ). There are no documented cases of death from marijuana overdoses. On the contrary, someone dies in the United States every 19 minutes from a prescription drug overdose. Similarly, alcohol was once prohibited in the US but unlike alcohol “the Times notes, cannabis is not particularly harmful:’ Casual use by adults poses little or no risk for healthy people.Its effects are mostly euphoric and mild, whereas alcohol turns some drinkers into barroom brawlers, domestic abusers or maniacs behind the
