Medical Marijuana
Cannabis is the most hated but yet very beneficial drug in the world. The United States has had strict laws against the use and distribution of marijuana since 1937. (The Union, Brett Harvey) Federal and state laws on medicinal marijuana are very different from each other. Cannabis has a lot of health benefits, this is the reason California was the first state to legalize it for medicinal purposes. (How weed won the west, Kevin Booth) People in America have been getting arrested for the use and possession of marijuana since it was outlawed. Charlie Lynch was one of those people in 2008. (Lynching Charlie Lynch, Rick Ray) I believe medical marijuana should be a legally taxed substance in the United States.
In a world that has hated marijuana since it was outlawed in 1937, the times are finally starting to change. (A NormL Life, Rod Pitman) Cannabis is still federally illegal and is considered a schedule 1 drug by the federal government. (A NormL Life, Rod Pitman) This means that marijuana has a high potential for dependency and has no accepted medical use. This means it is in the same category as LSD, PCP, and Heroin. (How weed won the west, Kevin Booth) Cannabis compared to those other drugs is like putting an assault charge in the same class as a murder charge. The federal government believes marijuana has no use or value and is just another drug American citizen’s misuse every day. (How weed won the west, Kevin Booth) Some states have had a difference in opinion regarding the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Eighteen states have legalized the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. (How Weed Won the West, Kevin Booth) Two of those states have legalized it for recreational use which basically means it is like tobacco or alcohol. But just because a state has medical cannabis legalized does not mean people can just do whatever they please with the substance.     Marijuana was first used for medicinal purposes dating back as early as the 1600’s. However, a law was passed in 1930, which banned the substance. Since then we have been fighting a never-ending war on drugs that has estimated to be over a trillion dollar failure, and we have nothing to show for it.     Marijuana is one of the most commonly used drugs in the world. Though illegal in most states, several states have passed laws allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. As of 2013 there are 18 states and DC, who have legalized marijuana for medical use while 10 more states are pending the bill to be passed. Marijuana remains illegal throughout the United States and has not been approved by the FDA for prescription for medicine. In fact, “The FDA and comparable authorities have not approved smoked cannabis for any condition or disease” (Medical). Wherever the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes is allowed, doctors recommend it to treat chronic diseases and conditions such as Crohn’s disease, AIDS, cancer, nausea resulting from chemotherapy, and even ADHD. Doctors have even recommended it for critically ill patients, as a way to relieve some of their pain and improve their overall quality of life. Although the substance can potentially aid in the pain of an ill patient, marijuana remains a controlled substance, making possession and distribution illegal. In the United States, federal law outlaws, all use of herb parts from Cannabis, while some states have approved use of herb parts from Cannabis as medical cannabis in conflict with federal law. The United States Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has a right to regulate and criminalize cannabis, even for medical purposes. A person can therefore be prosecuted for a cannabis-related crime. Medical Cannabis has been known to be used as a good thing as well, like to alleviate pain.
