Medical Marijuana
Cannabis, better know as Marijuana, has been around since 2900 B.C. A Chinese Emperor Fu His, referenced the plant as being, “a popular medicine that possessed both yin and yang.”(ProCon.org) In America, the use of Marijuana and the concept of it has been kicked around and jumbled for hundreds of years. It has been generalized and put in a box. Beginning with George Washington, he grew Marijuana on his private plantation for thirty years. In the early 1900’s states began outlawing the herb, starting with Massachusetts in 1911. Ironically, the first arrest ever made for possession of Marijuana was in Colorado. Today, Colorado along with Washington has legalized the recreational use of Cannabis. In 1970, Marijuana was labeled as a schedule one drug that had “no accepted medical use.” In 2013, that myth has been thoroughly shot down as propaganda as we can see by the uprising in Medicinal Marijuana Dispensaries across the country. However, some people still believe the plant is a harmful and a dangerous drug. It is one of the oldest, and most effective natural medicines in human existence. Marijuana does not affect everybody the same way.
The vast majority of people who are opposed to Marijuana have no idea what it is and they have no desire to learn about it. A common idea by most is that Cannabis kills your brain cells if you are a consistent user of the herb. That idea was based off of the Dr. Heath/Tulane study in 1974. In the study, they pumped sixty three Columbian joints through a gasmask into monkeys over a five minute period for three months, without any additional air in the mask. They concluded that the herb kills your brain cells. They actually suffocated the monkeys, when your brain isn’t getting oxygen, your brain cells die.(“The Union.” Youtube.com) Majority of Americans continued to believe this crooked study. There is a new study being done that is showing

The cannabis plant has been the topic of much debate throughout the history of this country. It was actually originally the work of the cotton industry who put big money behind illegalization for the plant 's mind altering effects. The cotton industry was afraid that hemp, a product of the cannabis plant, would soon overpower the strong hold of cotton since it was a more durable textile that required less work, less ground depletion, and could be grown almost anywhere. Since the time when cannabis first became illegal it has been grouped with other narcotics as a counterpart. The truth is cannabis has many benefits to society and other than the effects of…

“Marijuana is an addictive gateway drug” (Drug Policy Alliance Network, 2009). There is no good reason to use it, and it does nothing but ruin lives. These statements are frequently made by people who oppose the use of marijuana for medicinal reasons. Unfortunately, these statements are false. Medical breakthroughs would never be a reality if different risks were not taken. For example, long ago radiation was something that everyone was afraid of, but because a risk was taken, cancer patients now have hope of recovery. Someone somewhere believed that just maybe radiation would work, and it did. Marijuana deserves the same opportunity. Many studies have proven that marijuana does have significant medical benefits. There is no proof that marijuana is physically addictive, and furthermore, it is not physically possible to overdose from marijuana consumption (WAMM Organization, 2008). Despite these facts, over the years society has developed a very negative view of marijuana when in reality this drug has far more benefits than negative attributes.…

According to Cannabis Now magazine, it is believed that marijuana reached North America with Christopher Columbus in 1492 A.D. and initially was only used to make industrial goods and didn’t become popular for its recreational use until the early 20th century (“History Of”). From 1850 until 1942 marijuana was used and prescribed for multiple medical conditions including labor pains, nausea, and rheumatism. Marijuana is considered a mild hallucinogen with many short-term affects impacting mood, physical behavior, and neurological functioning such as euphoria, increased appetite, hallucinations, excitement, enhanced recollection, stress reduction,…

Marijuana has been used recreationally as well as medicinally for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of inhalation of marijuana, a small pile of charred cannabis/seeds, was found in Romania and believed to be dated prior to the 3rd millennia BCE. Marijuana use is considered to be beneficial to some, however has been controversially classified as a schedule 1 controlled substance, making it as illegal as heroin, politicians claim it to be more dangerous than cocaine, with little to no factual basis. Based upon my personal use of medical marijuana, I have seen more positive than negative effects, and believe it should be decriminalized so as to ease the pain, suffering, anxiety,…

The legalization of marijuana has both positive and negative outcomes; although, the benefits of legalization outweigh the risks of the negative impacts. Marijuana is a natural plant with psycho-active properties that is commonly used by Americans as a recreational drug. Additionally, marijuana has been used for medical purpose for thousands of years. Records show that “A native of central Asia, cannabis may have been cultivated as much as ten thousand years go. It was certainly cultivated in China by 4000 B.C. and Turkestan by 3000 B.C.” (Grinspoon 3). Furthermore, from 1900 to 1940, marijuana, including opium and cocaine were considered part of everyday drugs. As time went on, the U.S. cracked down on crack and opium, eventually outlawing them, nut continued to be very “loose” with the…

Marijuana was very much legal back in the day, it wasn't just legal it was one of the biggest agricultural crops in the world. Cannabis can also be hemp which is the most durable, robust, natural soft fiber on the face of the planet. It had thousands of use, the majority of fabric, lighting fuel, medicines, paper and fiber came from hemp.(Procon) The 1st marijuana law to exist in the United States was a law ordering farmers to grow hemp. Benjamin Franklin used it to start one of America's 1st paper mills. The 1st 2 copies of the declaration of independence were written on hemp paper. Up until the 1800s most of the textiles in the United States were made from hemp. 50% of medicine marketed in the last half of the 19th century was made from cannabis.(TrueActivist) Even Queen Victoria use the resin extracts from cannabis to relieve her menstrual cramps. It's superiority as a source for paper was also becoming known. Especially with hemp processing equipment. Then in the early 20th century companies recognized marijuana would be a competition to their business, which led to the downfall of all forms of cannabis. now the new marijuana tax act stated that if you wanted to grow hemp you had to buy a stamp, but they were not giving any out to anybody. And in effect all forms of cannabis became illegal. Things stay that way up until World War II where the government decided that hemp once again was a good thing. By the time the war was over hemp again was illegal. In 1948, when the marijuana law again came…

Marijuana has been used around the world for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of ailments. Chinese emperor Shen Nung was the first to record marijuana as a medical drug in 2737 B.C. He documented the drug’s effectiveness in treating the pains associated with rheumatism and gout. The legalization of medical marijuana has long been debated within American society and Government. Marijuana was a legal source for medicines in the U.S. until the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, which federally prohibited marijuana. Prior to the enactment of the Marijuana Tax Act, there were at least twenty-seven legal medicines that contained marijuana available in the U.S. In 1970, The Controlled Substances Act placed marijuana into a Schedule I status defining it as having a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the U.S. and a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision. Currently it remains illegal under federal law in the United States other than the four Americans that were grandfathered under the Compassionate Investigational New Drug Program. Contradictory to federal law, at present, medical marijuana is legalized in sixteen states and Washington, DC. There have been multiple studies and research done by advocates for and against medical marijuana legalization. Although there are strong arguments by both sides, federally legalizing the use of medical marijuana is the better choice because it has beneficial effects to patients suffering from various ailments; it will cause a decrease in recreational use nationwide; and it is less harmful to the user than many other prescription medications. At present, the pros outweigh the cons when considering the positive benefits to medical marijuana.…

These are all compounds that fight off disease within the body (7). It has been proven that marijuana has many positive affects on human health.
