We use Anne Scott MacLeod’s essay “Rewriting History” as a framework while reading Ford’s Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. “Rewriting History” is a persuasive essay giving criteria of a “good” Historical Fiction vs. a “bad” Historical Fiction. This essay focuses on three of MacLeod’s criteria for a “good” Historical Fiction: not rewarding rebellion, not appealing to “modern sensibilities”, and not overcoming social mores easily. Ford's novel Hotel on the Corner of Biter and Sweet successfully meets MacLeod's requirements for a "good" historical fiction in many ways, although, there are some flaws in a couple of his historical facts, nevertheless, the "good" historical facts and information in Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet out ways the few historical flaws. First of all, Ford makes sure to give Henry consequences to his rebellious acts; something MacLeod says many "bad" historical fictions do not do, they only reward with happy endings. Secondly, Ford uses racial discriminations that would have been used back in the…

1776, a brilliant book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough, retells the story of America’s brutal battle for independence throughout the American Revolution. In an informative tone, McCullough brings the American Revolution to life as he reiterates America’s history through the incorporation of details pertaining to each of the important figures of the war as well as the story format of his well-researched book. Through the use of visual aids such as maps and pictures depicting battles as well as the inclusion of personal and formal letters, McCullough is able to portray a vision of American hardship and success on a more personal level than most historic writers.…

After over 37 years of marriage, you can just imagine the memorable moments I have shared with Paul. From watching our 11 beautiful children grow up to be wonderful people to the activism work Paul used to do back in the day. The main reason for me to write this is not only because I am 65 years old and my mind seems to be losing me, but also to tell the untold tale of Mr. Paul Revere, a great husband and a true hero. I am writing this for my children, who have already heard this story a million times, and all the wonderful children that follow. Back when the days were spent watching little Paul Jr. and his father work endlessly at their silversmith shop…

I decided on using Paul Revere as my U.S history myth topic as he was one of the main figure heads you learn about growing up. Some common myths about Paul Revere that we all may have believed growing up may have been Paul Revere riding alone to warn other about the British. Revere was actually accompanied by two others on his ride Williams Dawes and Samuel Prescott. This is because Paul Revere was a better known character among the public from his job as a silversmith, causing to make a better connections among the community. Another myth commonly assumed is Paul Revere on horseback shouting “The British are coming!” At the time he was on what was considered a secret mission where he would need to avoid British patrols.…

The first piece that I will be talking about is “Paul Revere’s Ride” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In describing the midnight ride of Paul Revere, Longfellow uses a ton of imagery: "...the breath of the morning breeze/blowing over the meadows brown...", "...startled the pigeons from their perch/On the sombre rafters, that round him made/Masses and moving shapes of shade...". These lines of imagery present what Paul Revere did in a heroic way; yes, Paul Revere may have been a hero, but Longfellow writes the story as if the fate of the nation depended on simply Paul Revere, when in fact, it did not. There were others helping, because if there weren’t, there is no way that one man could alarm…
