English Poem for the painting WomanWith Lowered Eyes and Questionnaire
All I see is red

The sun lighting

The lids of my eyes

The brilliance colouring my cheeks and ears

The heat warming

My face and neck

I can feel everything

My cream skin

So sensitive to nature

The warmth of the sun bleeding through my thin shirt

The wind blowing

Causing the escaped hair at my neck and fore head to tap delicately on my skin

I feel the wind dancing around me

Casually it is blowing

Up my smooth sleeve

The cool breeze bringing the warmth of summer

Cooling my back

Already heated by the midday sun

I feel no troubles at all

As I am laying

My hand carelessly on my knee

All of my thoughts of problems drift out of my head like the calm before a storm

My head drifting

To my shoulder in weariness as the day begins its battles

The piece of Art, Smiling Girl, a Courtesan Holding an Obscene Image, painted by Gerrit van Honthorst in 1625 can be seen at the Saint Louis Art Museum. I was initially drawn to this image from across the gallery mostly due to the subject’s bright red dress with gold sleeves, it was one of the brightest colored images in the gallery. It is about three feet tall and two feet wide, it is an oil on canvas painting. As I approached the image, I was still intrigued as the image she is holding is of a naked man facing away, the subject in the painting seems to get enjoyment from this. To me this piece of art makes me curious, I want to know who this woman was and why she is holding that image. The artist seems to be communicating the importance of…

What struck me when I first saw this painting, other than the pretty flower garland, is how brightly illuminated she was. Her porcelain skin is highlighted as if the sun or some form of light shines down on her. This is in contrast to everything else being much darker. The contrast between her bright aura and the dark surroundings could the author’s way of symbolizing Madame de Thorigny’s status and wealth. It could also be a way of emphasizing her being the focal point of the painting. I noticed her gaze…

Wailing Women, created by Ken Currie is a large-scale painting that attempts to capture the emotional trauma of war (figure 1). Currently located at the McMaster Art Gallery, this oil painting successfully conveys large-scale loss of human life through its expressionistic style. Currie’s choice of style allows for the figures to be more distorted and symbolic, making the piece more visually appealing. Rather than merely present the event to the viewer in an art form, the Currie creates an emotional experience.…

The second work I chose to write about is The Genius of the Dance (Le genie de la danse) by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. I knew nothing about the subject matter of this work before visiting the museum, but I was very attracted to the beauty of it. The Genius is designed to be taken apart in certain places that are held together by pins. The separate parts were molded and cast, then joined by hand, and the seams were then covered by extra metal. The drapery gives the effect of movement, or dancing. The Genius of the Dance is a reduced version of The Dance with the same central figure. Also, Carpeaux got a lot of hate for the female nudity in The Dance, so he excluded them in The Genius of the Dance. I don’t think the texture or size of the sculpture adds to the impact of the work, because it wasn’t that big, and bronze was used quite a lot. I believe it’s the subject that attracts the viewers to this sculpture.…

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is vital to living organisms. It acts as a short-term store of energy in a cell, carrying it from where it is synthesised (e.g. the mitochondria) to where it is needed for biological processes. It is well suited to this job for the following reasons: it is small and soluble (and so can be easily transported around a cell); it is easily broken down to release energy; it can transfer energy to other molecules; and it cannot leave the cell. All of these facts mean that ATP is always available to the cell as an immediate source of energy.…

The pieces Ann Whitley Russell, done by an unknown artist in around 1820 and Lady Frances Knowles, also done by an unknown artist, in the mid-late 17th century are both examples of portraits that portray the sitters in diverse yet insightful ways to viewers. Both Ann Whitley Russell and Lady Frances Knowles are works of art composed of oil paint on canvas. Although these portraits are different, the aspects of space, color, and composition are all important elements that must be considered while comparing the woman in these two pieces.…

The first piece of artwork that will be looked is from the Renaissance Era. Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”(c. 1519) a painting that is known around the world, which has been known to cause skepticism as to who is this woman. Did she really exist? Or is this merely a self-portrait that Da Vinci was able to show his private devotion for the female form? The second piece of artwork that will be discussed is from The Middle Ages. Antonio Veneziano’s “Virgin and Child”(c. 1380) both pieces of art work stem from different eras but share many commonalities as well as shows the transformation of art techniques from Sfumato, to perspective, as well as linear perspective, Humanism, foreshortening and more between each era.…

Scott Fitzgerald and the different principles of the 1920s. It uses words such as “Jazz” (popular type of music), “steps leading to my dreams” (the American dream), and “short-haired girls” (which was a new style back then) to illustrate the Jazz Age. Nick is the writer of this poem, and throughout the poem, he is observing and describing the different colors he sees in the party. The first stanza is orange and it symbolizes warmth, energy and vigour to illustrate the “jazz [roaring]”, the “rich golden sun” and the “oranges and lemons”. The second stanza is blue, and it symbolizes purity, life and tranquility to illustrate the “bright blue gardens”, the “champagne by the sea”, and the “sky”. The third stanza is green, and it symbolizes money and wealth to illustrate “new diamonds”, “lavish vacations overseas”, and “West Egg in the nineteen twenties” (a wealthy neighbourhood). The fourth stanza is black, and it symbolizes darkness and nothingness to illustrate the “shades of black and white”, the “lost hearts” and night-time (the word “tonight”). After Gatsby dies, Nick realizes that all of the guests were in fact fake and phony. Nobody really cared about Gatsby and merely liked him…

This piece is in the limited colors of black, white, and red. The image itself is in the right top corner with a red skinny rectangle in white bold letters “Super Rich, Ultra Gorgeous” and in the left bottom corner in the same style it says “Extra Skinny, forever Young.” An attractive young woman is depicted summered in blocky ice water. The women wear a mask over her face, but it still purposely exposes her forehead through the bridge of the nose, with her lips popping out through a cutout. The style of the woman’s image resembles the 1950s. The females eyes in the photo serve as a focal point, however, her implied gaze leads upward. This allows the viewer to be curious where the implied line is vanishing. The work is clean and consists of representational art traditions. Kruger does not take any wild liberty with the editing, she simply adds her…
