“Let’s Make a Difference People!”
Toulmin Analysis (TA)

The article “Sense of Community” is written by Dr. Jay Grossman, a dentist that made contributions to the community. Dr. Jay Grossman wants me to believe that he is more than just a dentist; he’s a family man and a humanitarian.
Dr. Grossman has several specialties in one office to help patients avoid the complicated referral process. He is the founder of “Homeless not Toothless” which is a program he created to invite Los Angeles’ homeless citizens into the practice for free dental care. He enjoys his career a lot and he likes to help the less fortunate. According to the article, it states “this passion was not part of the curriculum in dental school. It came from an organization that emphasizes respect for people and commitment to a cause larger than one’s self: the US Navy” (Grossman 169).
The warrant of this essay is that they need more people in the community like Dr. Grossman in order for this world to be a better place. The reason I say that is because several of us treat homeless as if they are invisible. For example, if you see a homeless person in the middle of the street holding up a sign, what would you do? What do you be thinking in your head? Would you give that person money? Would you roll up your window and drive right past him/her? Would you believe it’s a scam like how the media portray it to be? Why does it seem like the holidays are like the only time people actually give compassion to homeless people instead of during daily basis? Because of the “Homeless not Toothless” program, Dr. Grossman was able to bless the less fortunate with an opportunity to get treatments that average people would pay lots of money to get. Dr. Grossman quoted in an interview "I felt if we could provide the homeless and underserved with quality dental care, maybe it would raise their pride and dignity and help them gain employment." Little things can change a person dramatically and can

By humanizing homelessness people can be compelled to effect change in their community. Change can alter the opinion of people or influence someone to act differently in their everyday life. Authors, Anna Quindlen in “Homeless,” and Barbara Lazear Ascher in “On Compassion,” emphasize the human aspect of change; however Quindlen is more effective in compelling people to change their ideas about homelessness because of her passionate and inspiring, she doesn’t defy in persuading change and making the reader see differently and create new aspects.…

Hayley and I had a good experience at Dr. Mangelson’s office. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. While we waited for the doctor to prepare for his surgery, one of the hygienists, Karen, let us into her operatory to observe her scaling a patient’s teeth. She showed us a couple of instruments she loves and gave us some tips on working in private practice. She told us about how she and some other hygienists get together in a “study group” for continuing education. An interesting thing she told us is that Dr. Stanley Malamed was one of her professors at USC so she invited him to Utah to speak to several dentists in the area in two weeks.…

The second chapter is an overview of societal methods of dealing with poverty and homelessness from the time of Martin Luther and after. As Gowen says “the charity activists, like Martin Luther 350 years earlier, were nostalgic for a radiant past when rich and poor had interacted more intimately, with less overt conflict” (Gowen/HHB, pg 35) To add to world history, there is also specific history about San Francisco, including the program called Matrix of the Frank Jordan era through “Care Not Cash”. Gowan discusses the dialog around the constructions of poverty, a moral viewpoint where sin is the cause, a disease viewpoint, and a systemic viewpoint. She points out that these discourses are taken up not only by authorities but also by homeless people themselves. Somebody who is considered a bad boy is somebody who is buying into the sin-talk viewpoint; the sick-talk viewpoint is common among people who have left the street through 12-step recovery; system talk is formulated in various ways, including identification with veterans who have been abandoned by the system. The theories of John Locke play a key role in the previous sentence. As Locke’s theories state that each person should be guaranteed “life, liberty, and estate.” The veterans who were left with nothing by the government and had to survive off of nothing did not fall under Locke’s theory, not given a type of life they needed, not given the same liberty as the rest of the people who are not considered homeless, and not given any estate to call their own like a rich man does.…

During the past decade there may have been an increase in homelessness due to the struggles of daily life. People have many ideas on ways that the government or communities can help improve these situations. It is not easy to help the homeless but any help can improve their lives and our streets. It may not take them completely off our streets but it can help them to get back on their feet.…

Near the holiday, we set up a Halloween party for the homeless at Morning Star and the neighborhood children. In this event, food was passed out to those people sitting there cold and alone. Some people even donated clothing to them, so by the end of the night, they were filled with warmth which came apparent from the smiles they flashed. I have learned to uphold a greater respect for others than I did four years ago. Some people may hold less respect for these people by the little that they are able to offer, but I gained even more because they’re there accepting help when in their position and some wouldn’t even show their faces. It wasn’t much that we were able to change, but our small deed made them happy even if it was just for a night which they expressed their bountiful…

The video was a great visual on understanding more into this population.Being homeless can mean foodless, cloths less, and sometimes friends or family less for many people. Homelessness in a way is a put down for many. It stops them from being able to accomplish their goals and ambitions. Some people are in a daily struggle of survival that it becomes their only struggle. In the video Sammy talks about just being able to survive, taking life day by day. Adam talks about going to complete more of his schooling and getting a BA. Keegan looks for love. They all have struggles and ambitions. I think that the interview shows us a good view point on how this population lives. I’m proud of these student being able to interview people and learn more into the homeless population. I have been in that place before. Not having a home is a big thing. Just knowing you don’t have anywhere you can rest your head at night and relax. Most people don’t understand that being homeless can sometimes mean more than just “not having a home”. Often times this means not having anything to eat. It’s sad because even if you have stuff, you don’t have anywhere to leave it, it often means carrying it or hiding it in public places. I think that homeless people need a more resources and help. Watching this video I can sometimes remember my struggles. When Sammy mentioned feeling “cold” I kind of felt sad. With the weather changing all the time you have to struggle threw all types of…

In Homeless by Anna Quindlen she gives us a homeless woman named Ann. She was doing a story on homeless and the woman was trying to prove her wrong by showing pictures of her house. Anna realized that this woman was just like all of us before. The point that Quindlen is trying to make: the homeless were people just like us once, they were no different. The thesis of On Compassion by Barbara Lazear Ascher is: we can't deny that homelessness exists when it hits us in the face everyday. Compassion is not a trait that we inherit, it is a learned experience. The thesis from Homeless by Anna Quindlen is the homeless were once just like us but something happened to them that made them lose their homes.…

Elise Elliott's opinion piece published in the Herald Sun addresses the issue of homelessness. Titled 'Let's bring a little warmth to the homeless,' Elliott communicates the importance of being aware of homeless situations and the help that the homeless require, to the residents of Melbourne. Throughout the article, she builds on the idea that homeless people are normal people too, wanting the audience to understand that and to take action to help people just like themselves. Elliott begins and ends with a light, encouraging tone which shifts into a more serious and heavier tone in the bulk of the article.…

SDAB represents the UMD Chapter for the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation’s (NCOHF) Students United for America’s Toothfairy program. Through this organization, I visit elementary and middle schools in the College Park and Washington D.C. area and teach young children the proper way to brush their teeth and how important oral hygiene is to their health. Just recently, I organized a drive to collect dental supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of PG County as part of the NCOHF’s Smile Drive campaign. As a leader of this organization, I’ve served as a mentor to other pre-dental students and created innovative projects and initiatives to foster participation in activities. Just this year alone, my co-president and I increased the member count from 15 to over…

It was about two different groups of volunteers who attended, and we supported with handing out food to the people who need it. Has a community, we cannot just sit at home and act like the things that are occurring in the society does not affect us as well. Helping the people the community and seeing how some people need these kinds of organizations shows that we as a community are doing the job. The people are part of the society, and as a college student in the Public Administration field, it showed me that to move ahead as a society we have to carry everybody along. Also, by providing these resources, it keeps many of these people out of the street; and it makes the community improve as a whole. After seeing how this organization helps the community and also hearing what people say that we the society are not helping the poor, I believe that it is…

He walks in the door, tired and weak. He has no car, or home, and he’s walked from the complete other side of town just to get food. Starving, he orders his sandwich with the utmost politeness. His name is Frank, a homeless man that we--at Jimmy John’s--give free food to. Frank comes in very often to get food, because there’s not many other ways for him to get food because he can’t afford it himself. Frank also suffers from mental disabilities, and it is incredibly sad to see him homeless and hungry like he is. Frank can not maintain a stable job because of these mental disabilities. Instead of neglecting the homeless for not getting a job, we should be doing everything we can to help them get back on their feet.…

Although some homeless people have drug or mental illnesses, some have had just plain bad luck or poor judgment. In the film, The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner struggles severely. He can hardly sell his machine for business, his wife leaves him, and he has to find places to stay at night. Despite these struggles, he is determined to succeed and has a positive attitude. This helps Gardner at getting a prestigious job and Dean Witter and finding true happiness. In Weltner’s essay, a girl named Adrienne used some poor judgment and ended up having no backup support system. There are many ways to become homeless other than drug addiction and mental illnesses. For this reason, we need to continue programs to help our homeless. I know someone in the same shoes as Adrienne and Gardner.…

My experiences serving others have exposed me to the issues my community faces and have shown me that I can make a difference. My first experience working with underserved populations in my community was serving food at Union Station Homeless Services’ Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park in high school. This made me step out of my comfort zone and interact with a group I was unfamiliar with. Through serving food and interacting with homeless and low-income families, I saw that my small actions could brighten one’s day. This inspired me to start Heal L.A. at UCLA with some of my classmates. We wanted to help the significant homeless population surrounding our campus in any way possible. What started as buying meals and conversing with them has grown…
