America's Toothfairy Analysis
When walking around the University of Maryland, you’ll see posters plastered across walls, on the outside of buildings, on bus stops, the buses themselves, and even dumpsters reminding each of us to be fearless. At the University of Maryland, being fearless is not just a suggestion, it is an expectation. Most people just walk by these messages and don’t really understand what being fearless really means. It’s more than being bold, courageous, and brave. It’s about daring to try something new, challenging yourself to be a better you, taking risks with your ideas and plans, and to me, it mean inspiring others to pursue something that was once unimaginable to them. With this mentality, that I carried myself through my four years here. In all of the organizations I was a part of, I embraced change and innovation in my leadership positions, and most importantly, became the person I am today. Growing up as a first generation student in America, has proven to be difficult but I’ve gained a lot of independence and …show more content…
SDAB represents the UMD Chapter for the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation’s (NCOHF) Students United for America’s Toothfairy program. Through this organization, I visit elementary and middle schools in the College Park and Washington D.C. area and teach young children the proper way to brush their teeth and how important oral hygiene is to their health. Just recently, I organized a drive to collect dental supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of PG County as part of the NCOHF’s Smile Drive campaign. As a leader of this organization, I’ve served as a mentor to other pre-dental students and created innovative projects and initiatives to foster participation in activities. Just this year alone, my co-president and I increased the member count from 15 to over

Today I am here to express my opinion on how can FBLA (future business leaders of America) can strengthen the confidence of students, in themselves and their work. Being a part of FBLA you will find out that there are many achievements and goals that we students will want to set and reach for. While reaching these goals that students in this program set, it’s also teaching us how to become better leaders of business. I feel without confidence you cannot get anywhere in life, no one will take you seriously and the world needs us to take charge. That’s why I strongly feel we, as students, have to have confidence in ourselves and our work.…

Everywhere we step into we bring our ideas and knowledge, we have the ability to create a significant change among the people that we affiliate with. There might have been countless times where we might have been given the power to create change but have unfortunately misused that power and wasted it. Having such power can be overwhelming however there has always been the time where we gather the courage to stand up and lead, open our mouths and pour out the knowledge that we have accumulated through the years. Having the courage can sometimes be the solution to some conflicts, because we might be the only ones with the knowledge for a solution and our cowardness can lead to a decline in production. During my high school career, I was part…

Being a first-generation student is hard work, especially being part of the low income working-class. There is no one there to hold your hand to get through the process. Yes, there are counselors and advisers, but they have other students to help as well, which means they will not be with you every step of the way. First-generation students being the first in their family to attend college, makes it easier for the student to feel discouraged from the responsibilities and having to figure things out on their own. Since college is sought out to be only for the upper-class who do not lack cultural capital, and have relatives or siblings who have gone to college, prevent the lower class students to feel as if they might have a chance to succeed…

I have been working on "Teeth Like Mine" for awhile now. The piece explores the relationships we often have in confined places-- such as small towns-- and the episodes that occur that ruin these precious friendships. Not only does this story explore the wonders and faults of the human heart, but how social, economic, and geography make us who we are. I'm excited to show "Teeth Like Mine" and hope it can find a home on The Flexible Persona.…

I’m a current student at Northern Virginia Community College and the oldest of five children. My parents and I along with two of my siblings, are immigrants to this nation, from El Salvador. Being the oldest of five, there has always been a huge emphasis on me being the key role model for my younger siblings, to obtain good grades, stay clear of any troubles and to help my parents in anything. We left our livelihood in our country because of gang related violence, government corruption, and lack of opportunities. This is very similar to any immigrant that seeks to resettle in this rich nation, the overall accomplishment that comes along with the ethos of the “American Dream.” Since our arrival to this this nation, my parents, specifically my father, has worked extremely hard. He has worked in good or bad weather, all to give his family a…

The quote “Love conquers all things except poverty and toothache” by Mae West, has few meanings. Some think this means love can conquer anything they want except being poor and getting a toothache. Others may think different and think love is just something that may help make it better but it can not help poverty or a toothache. Everyone has his own opinion’s. Not every one of them are wrong or right. Some prefer love and some do not. Love is not always found with someone, it can always be found with something. People can love one another but people can also love sports, animals, and hobbies also. People hate both poverty and toothaches but you can not always just get rid of them right away. It takes time. When one finds love it can help with…
