The role of religion is extremely significant in Let Me Speak, One Day of Life and Things Fall Apart. The religious beliefs of the elite usually impact the life of the masses.
In Things Fall Apart, Mr. Brown discusses Christianity with Akunna. While Akunna tries to compare his religion with Christianity, Mr. Brown refuses to accept these comparisons. Mr. Brown’s goal as a missionary is just to be able to gain some power so he could have a voice in the community to reach to people so he can encourage them to convert to Christianity. Once Okonkwo had to leave the village, everything started to change and the leaders of the villages lost power, which was an opportunity for the British to use religion as a tool to take over.
In One Day of Life, religion seemed to always be political because of the way the church was used. The priests in the church appeared to change based off who had more control in the area. Most of the Salvadorians were Catholic but the elite saw this as a communist religion.
