Mason’s friend from Virginia, Patrick Henry, who was also a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, persuaded the burgesses to take action against the Stamp Act. The Virginia assembly passed a resolution, or a formal expression of opinion, saying it had “the only and sole exclusive right and power to lay taxes” on its citizens. Another friend of Mason, Samuel Adams in Boston helped start an organization called the Sons of Liberty against the Stamp Act. Mason joined this organization and helped burn effigies, or rag figures representing an unpopular individual. Crispus Attucks, a dockworker who was part African and part Native American, was one of Liam and Mason’s closest friends since birth. The three of them always did good together and even the neighborhood would sometimes consider Attucks a brother to Liam and Mason. On March 5, 1770 a fight finally broke between Bostions and the British soldiers. There was a lot of yelling, fighting, and even deaths when this unfortunate encounter, or unexpected meeting, happened. Sadly, one of these deaths were the death of Crispus Attucks. This was later called the Boston Massacre. When the brothers heard the news of their friend’s death they got into an argument. Mason yelled at Liam for still supporting England after their friend, who was pretty much a brother to them, got assassinated by one of the soldiers. Liam yelled back that the colony isn’t ready for independence and that although he was saddened about how his best friend dying, he still is right.
