Mesothelioma is not a common type of cancer which diagnosis is not easily made, in the matter of fact, most of the time it is not until it is too advanced that the symptoms appear. Besides this, there are several factors affecting the time of life of a person after being diagnosed with Mesothelioma such as the stage in which the patient is and where the tumor is located. Stages are divided into four (I, II, III, IV) and location is commonly in the lung lining and in the abdominal lining which are called Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma respectively.

The previously described, it is known as Pleural Mesothelioma, the one affecting lungs and chest; on the other hand, Peritoneal Mesothelioma affects the abdominal area. This is a rarer type of Mesothelioma and is the more common in women; luckily this does not mean a shorter life expectancy, but instead, a longer one. This is due to the fact that peritoneal tumor does not spread as fast as pleural one and that there are no stages established, it is more depending on the general health of the patient. Recently made discoveries have improved the life expectancy from one year to approximately three years after diagnosis, depending on gender, overall health and age of the patient. As previously said the statistics are general and with appropriate treatment the number of years increases.
To summon up, the main factors that affect the life expectancy are stages and tumor location. In stage I of Pleural Mesothelioma is of two years; in stage II, one and a half years; in stage III, approximately 15 months and; in stage IV is about one year.
