Dr. Montessori is known as the founder of Montessori Method, who played an important role in the development of early childhood education. She was born in middle class family on 31st August 1870 and was the only child of her parents. Her father, Alessandro Montessori was a conservative military man. But her mother, Renidle Montessori was a liberal lady.
Although in those days whole Europe was very conservative but Montessori got medical and scientific education because of her father’s transfers in big cities throughout Italy. She graduated with highest honors from the Medical School of the University of Rom and became the first woman Physician in Italy in 1896. Montessori taught at the medical school of the University of Rom and came into contact with the children of working class and poor. When she appointed as a director of new Orthophrenic School and came to know about the life of autistic \ mentally disabled children. Then she discovered purposeful activities for them.
When Montessori browsed libraries seeking successful work previously done with the education of children with disabilities, she came to know about Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard and Edouard Seguin. They both were French Doctors of eighteen and nineteen centuries. Itard worked with the “Wild Boy of Aveyron” and explained the importance of development periods in normal human growth and proved that if proper stimulation and experiences are not provided during sensitive period of development to a child, it may hinder or does not take place at all. Montessori took the idea of observation and experimentation from the work of Itard and Seguin. She started work on mentally disabled patients using these ideas and after two years, they were able to pass the standardized exam given by the Italian public school.
