Life is a Climb
“If you’re trying to achieve there will always be roadblocks. I’ve had them, everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall don’t turn around and give up, figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.” –Michael Jordan. In life everyone has obstacles but it’s your choice to either give up or push through it. If you fall, get back up, and learn from it. For example, in the novel “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story”, while Ben Carson was growing up he faced many obstacles but he decided to push through them and overcome the obstacle. One of the obstacles happened when he was in elementary school, he was considered the “dumb” student in all his classes because he would always have low grades. One day, Sonya, Ben’s mother was examining him and noticed that her son couldn’t see from a couple feet away, that’s when she figured out he needed glasses. After he had his glasses he started reading books and he became interested in science. If Sonya wouldn’t have noticed that he needed glasses he would have been making low grades on all subjects, he would not be able to read, and a slight chance of him not being a neurosurgeon............nd and give up, figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.” –Michael Jordan. Adversity can bring out the positive and negative sides in a person. In “The Proof of Worth,” Edgar Albert Guest demonstrates how challenges in life can help someone understand what he or she is capable of during a hardship. Similarly, “The Importance of Adversity in Growth and Development” written by Patrick Kohan exemplifies how children will never learn how to conquer an obstacle if they are always given assistance. Furthermore, Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, Unbroken, indicates that experiencing problems can affect the way a person’s body reacts and thinks about a difficult moment. Ultimately, the authors highlight that obstacles can be a complex or helpful task, as well as benefit people in the future when they need to know their true talents.…

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…

Overcoming Obstacles Makes Better Individuals “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome” (Booker T. Washington). Obstacles are a required part of life if you wish to grow and develop. If you do not face challenges, you will not become a strong person. Individuals pushing to achieve the goals we set and overcoming the roadblocks ahead of us are what make us who we are. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and in my own personal experience, people encounter obstacles, and eventually overcome them.…

Frederick Douglas one said, “If there is no struggle there is no progress”. Douglas is expressing how people have to go through a lot of hard work. My father always told me that nothing worth having comes easy. I carry these words close to my heart and they have driven me to challenge myself through life, especially in my STEM career. My major in the science field has been similar to riding a roller-coaster, but I have learned to overcome most of the obstacles I have faced along the way. No matter what situation brought me down, I remained positive and tried to think of solutions rather than giving up. Finally, in the last few months, many of my peers would mention that I am the type of person who is able to withstand obstacles and recover quickly.…

Kevin Conroy once said, “Everyone is handed adversity in life. No one’s journey is easy. It’s how they handle it that makes people unique.” Dictionary.com defines adversity as “adversity n. adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress.” Adversity is something that everyone will experience at some point in his life; however, some people face greater adversities than others. Morrie Schwartz and Elie Wiesel are two men that faced two of the greatest adversities that this world knows. Elie is a survivor of Adolf Hitler’s destruction of the Holocaust, and Morrie Schwartz was a simple man who lost a battle to Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS. Take it as an example of some of adversity that I had to overcome to get to this point. It is these various road blocks that I believe have set me up to realize my potential and this scholarship would be key to that. At every turn in my life I have made the best of my current situation and tried to adapt and succeed however I can. Of course I have failed and I will continue to do that in life, but I believe that part of success is dealing with struggle, failure, and adversity while turning it into something positive. Malcolm X said it best, “There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next…
