Whenever parents bring their children to the pool or beach, it’s easy to overlook the lifeguards sitting at their posts carefully patrolling all of the people and activities going on around them; especially if you are the parent of strong swimmers who you believe are more than qualified to be lifeguards themselves. Being a strong swimmer and loving the water may seem super important to becoming a lifeguard, but in reality the duties of one are much more involved and crucial to the enjoyment and safety of all the pool and beach goers. These lifeguards are not only ready to save lives at the drop of a hat, they are learning valuable life skills that can be applied to any aspect of life.

Movies may fill our heads with images of “summer crushes” -- tanned easy going young adults, sunbathing in oversized white chairs for hours on end. This is simply not true. A lifeguard is expected to be prepared for a life or death situation that can arise at any moment. They are responsible for reacting in a quick and effective manner to any and all emergencies. In many cases, a vigilant lifeguard should be able to prevent an emergency from happening because of their highly trained watchful eye. Your child will feel confident and accomplished when they are able to stop an accident before it happens, which will in turn reward them for being a great …show more content…
If you want to help them prepare for a lifeguard test, training with them over the winter season is a fantastic way to improve the health of the family and spend quality time together. There are many facilities that contain indoor heated pools year round, allowing for the whole family to swim together and prep for that perfect summer job! The added exercise for your child is a huge benefit to lifeguard training. In fact, around 2 ½ hours each week of activity, like swimming, can decrease someone’s risk of having a chronic illness. The training not only teaches valuable skills, but it can help your family lead a healthier lifestyle as

This summer job was located at the local swimming pool where I worked for three summers, watching hundreds of bathers enjoy their summer fun. There were three other lifeguards that also worked with me. So, why did we choose this job to sit up on a ‘perch’ for 25 to 50 minutes at a time when it's a sweltering 100 degrees on a daily basis? We all loved coming to work at the pool because it wasn’t like any other job that many teenagers had in our hometown. For starters, we got to be outside and dress very comfortably. Wearing a swimsuit with one of our lifeguard shirts was our dress code for work, and our biggest necessities on the job were a whistle, a hat, and lots of water. With a sociable and supportive management and friendly co-workers, I never dreaded going to the pool to work.…

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a military branch serving the both on domestic and foreign shores since 1790. With a motto of “Semper Paratus” or “Always Ready” and a force of around 42,000 the USCG maintains 11 critical missions ranging from port security and drug interdiction to ice breaking operations and enforcing international fishing regulations. One of their more known missions is for Search and Rescue, in fact there are at last five movies based upon the USCG Search and Rescue mission itself. On the less exciting side, the Centralized Service Desk (CSD) is a branch within; it supports the fleets’ daily computer operations. When people think of supply and demand or customer relationships they would rarely associate it with…

Use Layers of Protection To prevent swimming pool drownings, layers of protection are essential. Place barriers completely around the pool, closely supervise young children, and be prepared in case of emergency. In addition: o If a child is missing, always look first in the pool. Seconds count ! o Knowing how to swim doesn’t make a child drown-proof. Never use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. o Keep rescue equipment and a phone next to the pool. o Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). o Install physical barriers around the pool to limit access. - Fences and walls should be at least 4-feet high and installed completely around the pool. - Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be out of reach of small children. o If your house forms one side of the barrier for the pool, doors leading from the house to the pool should be protected with alarms that sound when the doors are unexpectedly opened. Or, use a power safety cover, a motor-powered barrier placed over the water area, to prevent access by young children. o For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured or removed when the pool is not in use.…

Lack of supervision of children around water is a major factor in the accelerating number of drowning deaths. Statistics show that the majority of children who have drowned in a residential swimming pool were supervised by at least one adult. In most cases, the adult only took their eyes off the child for five minutes or less, (Eastwood, 2010). Constant supervision should always be exercised.…

The swimming pool is a place I am very familiar with because I spent a great deal of my childhood there. My father has been a swimming coach for nearly twenty three years. When I was little, I stayed there all day long. I was always busy playing with huge floating boards and swimming tubes in the outdoor pool. Sometimes I sat at the counter or the life guard chair acting like I was an employee. Furthermore, I often joined the class of other coaches because my father was too busy to teach me, and played many different kinds of games with the students there. After playing around for several hours, I would take a sauna and a brief rest. The whole swimming pool was just like my own amusement park. Only when it was time to have lunch or dinner would I get out from the water. Every time my hands were crumpled like an old man.…
