In the reading of color -blind racism by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, the topic of people (mostly white) saying that they are color-blind and don't really see race anymore. In this reading we see more than one way of how this statement is not fully true, so Bonilla-Silva came up with "color-blind racism". In the reading we get different frames of color-blind racism and the form that best fits my article is the naturalization form. On CNN in 2014, two photos were shown to a group of people (black and white). The first one was two white men fighting, one had a knife and the other was unarmed.…
Individuals associated with Dartmouth College and Princeton University created a study that deals with ironic effects of racial bias during interracial interaction. The study began off of the basis that individuals that have high levels of racial bias tend to regulate them selves when around others of another race. They often do this to make sure that their racial bias does not show. Individuals with low level of racial bias tended not to regulate themselves as much because they were more comfortable in their situation. Interestingly, researchers believed that individuals with high levels of racial bias were favored more by the opposite race. In order to confirm these hypotheses researchers created a study.…
To start, I have witnessed racism and discrimination first hand. My childhood friend was teased on a daily…
In the novel Maus II by Art Spiegelman you hear first hand from a survivor of Auschwitz the experiences of the holocaust and the horrific consequences of racism. Race is something that has developed over time and is constantly changing. Race is something that is seen differently by different people. “There is a continuous temptation to think of race as an essence, as something fixed, concrete, and objective. And there is also an opposite temptation: to imagine race as a mere illusion” (Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Identity 183). Race can be seen as something concrete or as something changing. “The effort must be made to understand race as an unstable and “decentered” complex of social meaning constantly being transformed by political struggles” (Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Identity 183). Race hasn’t been and will never be something that is set in stone and will never change. As society progresses and changes over time, so will the definition and make up of race and racism. “We should think of race as an element of social structure rather than as an irregularity within it, we should see race as a dimension of human representation rather than an illusion” (Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Identity 184). The most common definition for race (the word definition is used very lightly because race is something that is always changing) is “race is a concept which signifies and symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies” (Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Identity 183). Race is something that distinguishes “different” human beings apart from one another. Sometimes in the end result of this some humans are put “higher” or at a level of greater important than others.…
Matriculating from a child into a young lady, the color of my skin often times influenced how I felt about myself and who I could be as an individual in society. As I sat in the front of the class at a predominately white school or walked down the hallways, I anticipated the moment that I would yet again be called another racial name- sometimes from those who looked similar to me but did not understand the essence of their doings. Reaching my final year in middle school, I began to define myself in a way that encompassed the names I was called. Instead of describing myself as the intellect I was or by my astounding level of accomplishments, I defined myself as someone who must be unfortunate to be African-American. Witnessing very few African-American women being presented in a positive manner in the news, learning my entire history and heritage in a single textbook chapter, and hearing demeaning words merely because of my dark skin tone inhibited me from seeing what roles I was capable of having in society. I often times asked…
While not every person of color you meet can say that they have personally felt that they have experienced actual racism, it is still somewhat prevalent in our society. Underlying racism through microaggressions still carries on to this day. A microaggression is a comment that may seem inoffensive on its surface yet still holds some subliminal anger and hatred in its message; they can be heard on a near daily basis by all. “You speak like a white person.” “You’re pretty for a [insert racial minority] girl.” These aforementioned microaggressions are ones that I myself have been told and while they may seem like compliments, they are far from them. I have lived on Long Island my whole life and the people who have said…
Because of their foundations, colorism and racism intertwine and, what is more, colorism an expression of internalized racism (Hunter, 2007). As a matter of fact, both of the terms mentioned are related to the preferential treatment of individuals based only on skin color. (Hunter, 2007). In academic terms, racism is a sociological dimension that supports unequal treatment of people of different skin color (Pollock, 2008). As a result, the black are considered to be inferior and are thought to be less intelligent than the white. Racial discrimination is another dimension inextricably connected with both racism and colorism. It constitutes many activities which aim is to diminish the black (Pollock, 2008). Besides, black people have to face…
Race is the least talked about in America but Racial lines still exist. Its 2017 and social injustice things are still occurring within the nation. Football players have brought it to the attention of the president by taking a kneel during the anthem. The players were looking for attention not only from the president but from the police the people. Everyone is trying to raise awareness so that whites and blacks can coexist without hatred. Which is the color line racism it never truly ended. It all begin back deeper in American history. The first people that had to endure being slaves were the Indians. When the population began to die and were strong enough for the labor work. “European slavers transported millions of Africans across the ocean in a terrifying journey known as the…
Petrus Camper gained international repute among renaissance anthropologists, evolutionists and proponents of divisive scientific racism for his theory of the "facial angle" which they used as a vital cephalometric variable to validate their claim to racial and intellectual superiority.…
Numbness and sadness as I solemnly write this. Those characteristics very opposite of my usual state of being, however this is how I felt at three in the morning watching President-elect Trump give his speech. Utterly I watched the election today unable to fathom how America could elect this man. Reading and listening to things his supporters scream at rallies and publish on the fictional fantasy land that is the internet. Consumed with hatred my heart was heavy. Racism isn’t integrated in our communities, obviously because I can use the same bathroom as caucasians. That doesn’t signify I don’t take note when I walk into a BBQ place with a white girl in Calhoun, GA and every pair of eyes is looking at me with either confusion or hatred. Subtle racism is a social construct that humans of different pigment deal with, and that is fine, my life went on. Nothing I haven’t been through. However today I felt a unprecedented level of hated. I have never felt more unwelcome, unwanted, and unacceptable. How dare you America? Seventeen of the most important years of my life in this nation...to feel that in one morning. How dare you make me feel un-American as I type this on my MacBook in my room, with every light on, air conditioning and 30 pairs of shoes for no reason? See what I’m getting at? I'm not saying all Trump supporters are racist, they’re my friends, they’re my neighbors, they have opinions. Sadly you can’t neglect the fact that unfortunately a fairly large portion of…

Racism has always been a very interesting research topic for me. I always wondering what really cause people to judge each other’s race, or hating each other because the different races between people. Many sociologic scientists (including my own sociology professor) believe that racism is something we understand and learn thought to our parent or the environment, but from my point of view racism is born naturally and the society made it worst.…

The biggest physical difference in the human population is the color of skin, which vary a lot between individuals and in different places in the world. Appearance is dramatically different between individuals but skin color is an example of something exhibits continuous variation. Skin color cannot be defined by colors but by one extreme to another. Skin color is a known as a polygenic gene that is a consequence of the difference in alleles of more than one gene.…
This activity was very intresting and helpful and educating in learing about polymers and how to determine spontaneity using different materials. When heat energy is released from the system, the surroundings gain that energy, while the system losses energy. The far more important lesson of this activity was to realize that the two factors that affect spontaneity are changes in enthalpy and changes in entropy. My hypothesis was correct because during the investigation If you heat the rubber band and then streatch it, then the rubber band will…
