Subtle Racism Analysis
Numbness and sadness as I solemnly write this. Those characteristics very opposite of my usual state of being, however this is how I felt at three in the morning watching President-elect Trump give his speech. Utterly I watched the election today unable to fathom how America could elect this man. Reading and listening to things his supporters scream at rallies and publish on the fictional fantasy land that is the internet. Consumed with hatred my heart was heavy. Racism isn’t integrated in our communities, obviously because I can use the same bathroom as caucasians. That doesn’t signify I don’t take note when I walk into a BBQ place with a white girl in Calhoun, GA and every pair of eyes is looking at me with either confusion or hatred. Subtle racism is a social construct that humans of different pigment deal with, and that is fine, my life went on. Nothing I haven’t been through. However today I felt a unprecedented level of hated. I have never felt more unwelcome, unwanted, and unacceptable. How dare you America? Seventeen of the most important years of my life in this nation...to feel that in one morning. How dare you make me feel un-American as I type this on my MacBook in my room, with every light on, air conditioning and 30 pairs of shoes for no reason? See what I’m getting at? I'm not saying all Trump supporters are racist, they’re my friends, they’re my neighbors, they have opinions. Now I dare a motherfucker who’s never left Wyoming to make me feel un-American, because the Statue of Liberty means something to me now more than when I walked it when I was six, because one of my favorite pictures of me as a kid is with the World Trade Center, because at the age of 15 I went to Washington DC and marched with thousands for immigration reform expressing my right of freedom of speech.
