Frazier and Esquivel both use a range of literary elements to portray the depth of the stories, and especially the development of the characters. Cold Mountain paints a picture of two lovers separated by war and conflict. This separation, as well as death, themes, and character development sets up the perfectly tragic ending. However, in spite of Inman’s death, life continues for Ada, and she is left solely with memories of an immensely passionate love. On the other hand, Like Water For Chocolate presents tragedy throughout the novel, as Tita is banned from sharing a love equally passionate to that of Ada and Inman. But like Cold Mountain, Tita and Pedro are reunited and depart in a way that does not signify sorrow, but rather release and joy, which Esquivel conveys through magical realism. Ultimately, even though death is a tragedy, the consistent portrayal of fundamental love ensures that these novels are purely great romantic stories with an underlying universal message that in spite of the calamities we must face in life, one way or another we will get by in the end, leaving us at peace with ourselves and content with who we are as
