All of these factors culminate to form some sort of final opinion for the person; that encompassing opinion is the person’s thoughts on every country, every culture, and every country’s people. This opinion is often difficult to shift, as it has been formed under many years, and is the basis for many stereotypes, racial prejudices, and bigotry. Jenny Boully, a Thai-American author, confronts these topics in her essay titled “A Short Essay on Being” in the Triquarterly magazine. “A Short Essay on Being” illuminates the credulous American perspective of Asia by depicting Americans as ethnocentrists, who view the world around them in a simply American view and impose their own…

In the Omela’s the people know of the existence of a child who is living under terrible circumstances but yet they still go on with their lives as if though nothing is happening. The American writer, Lois Lowry in her novel, The Giver, claims that in creating a utopian society the creator manufactures a dystopia, since the individuality of a person contradicts the creator’s idea of a utopia. She develops her claim by first creating a utopia where the residents lack individuality conforming to the criteria of sameness, then presenting the absence of intense emotions, then convey the reader’s thoughts of the utopia by placing a main character who gains his emotions and individuality, and finally declares that the utopia lacks morality spawning a dystopia. Lowry’s purpose is to criticize conformity in order to state that to enjoy life one must suffer to appreciate life. She establishes a thoughtful tone for the audience…

Getting into a more general statement regarding the black characters in this novel, they happen to beautifully exemplify “To Love Tenderly” with their hardworking past on the “First Purchase African M.E. Church” that “was in the Quarters outside the southern town limits, across the old sawmill tracks.” They had even named it “First Purchase because it was paid for from the first earnings of freed slaves.” And this displays their developing respect for one another and their level of tolerance for differences when “Negros worshipped in it on Sundays and white men gambled in it on weekdays.” To Love Tenderly is exactly what this black community is taking part in, them facing a high level of disrespect towards their temple still does not seem to change their attitude and actions towards the white folks. The Church happens to lose its amazing appearance and transforms into a vapid look once shown as a gambling centre on weekdays but fortunately that doesn’t change the black communities’ necessity to pray.…
