Character Sketch: Lily Owens from The Secret Life of Bees

Lily Owens is the main character in ‘The Secret Life of Bees’. She is a young girl who escapes her abusive father while searching for information on her mother, who passed away when she was only four years old. Lily finds herself in Tiburon, South Carolina with her ‘stand-in mother/house keeper. Lily’s character goes through many different hardships on her journey throughout the novel.

Despite Lily’s difficult and confusing childhood, she never gives up hope on getting the information that she needs. Lily was given very little details on her mother and her death, so she has many questions and is overall very confused. “How could I live the whole rest of my life knowing these
