Introduction
I have chosen the cinema trailer Lincoln. I will be writing about how the trailer makes you feel and does it make you want to go watch it in the cinema and if it does how does it also what kind of techniques have been used? The trailer is about the American civil war between the south and the north states of America. The south wanted to keep slavery and the north wanted to abolish slavery.
This screen shot from the side is taken from the trailer this can shows us that there is quite a bit of violence going to be happening in the film so this kind of shows the action side of what the film will be like

a bit of violence going to be happening in the film so this kind of shows the action side of what the film will be like
From this screen shot of the trailer it shows that after the violence there is a lot of death and from this it makes us feel sad.

These two are screen shots taken from the trailer and we do not see his face but from his pose and because he is a major public figure and well known people will know who he is.

This is another screen shot taken from the trailer as you can see from the picture the battle field is quite dark, grey, and gloomy but as you can see there is someone holding a bright flag that represents freedom.

Narrative
The information provided to you is that Abraham Lincoln is the president at the time and you know that he wants the abolishment of slavery, but there is many people saying that he cannot do it and that he cannot have peace between the two sides and have abolished slavery, but throughout the trailer we see that he gets more and more people to come and join him and they try to help him achieve his goal.
Also that from the trailer you get a sense that he is a very powerful and determined man because he over powers overs men’s voices and he makes greats sacrifices for what he does and does not give in easily. At the start of the film is uplifting with a fighting scene but because of the soothing music we think it is the good people winning but then there is sad music and it gives off a unhappy but then Lincoln speaks for the first time and then after that everything is back to normal and ok again and he music becomes soother.
Visual
In the trailer it is very dark and you can tell by the clothing that it is old fashion about the late 1800’s. Also at the start it seems to be quite dull and dark and there people fighting and people dying but as the trailer progress is starts to get brighter and there is a sense of hope and peace from all the fighting and also there are people laughing, but also at the start to finish you can see that he is getting older and older and then at one point he has a son. In the trailer you see fighting between two sides and people dying at one point, you see a people getting angry.
Verbal Throughout the trailer there are many old saying but they are very powerful because someone says ‘This nation have a new birth of freedom’ this is said because in those days black people did not have any rights and freedom and then it is said ‘government of the people by the people for the people shall not perish’ this is because the government was just people that wanted money and now there is this new order and people want their government for them and to have freedom. The first part of the trailer is nice and calm and people talking but then people start to get frustrated an angry and then they start to question it because at one point they say ‘it’s either the amendment or confederate peace’ this is said be the amendment is to protect every American citizen and that they can have freedom but if they want that they can not have peace but if they don’t have that they can have peace but there will be slavery.
Order of information
The order of information is that the problem is that there is a civil war in America because one side does want slavery and the other does not, the president at the time is Abraham Lincoln, he wants the abolishment of slavery that is why they are fighting, halfway through the trailer you see that his own people are turning against him but then he gives a small speech and then people start to come back onto his side you see.
Music
A first the music is quit and calm it gives the effect that everything is ok and nothing is wrong this fits in with the scene because there is light and no fighting but then a little bit after that the me music goes deep and gives the effect of sorrow and misery this also fits in well because there is a lot of fight and death and also people shouting but after that the music rise and there is a sense of cheerfulness.
SFX
Through out the trailer there are many various moments for special effect because at the start of the film there is a fighting scene so there will be some SFX in there after that there us a massive house fire which will be SFX, the use of smoke in the background is another special effect, a one point there is a scene were lots of hats are going up into the sky this could be a SFX and then the massive battlefield at the end is SPX.
We have many famous names at one the first one we see is that it is a Steven Spielberg film, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and then Tommy Lee Jones these are all famous names and on each one they say that they are a academy award winner they have put this in because people might recognise the names and that will be more of a reason to go and watch the film. In the trailer it is kind of a film for men and women who find it interesting and fascinating to see and I kind of in a way address everyone because it is a film that everyone would like to go and see.
Style
I think that this film is dramatic because as soon as you watch that trailer you feel that you want to go and watch the film so it hook you into it and you feel little bit connected with the characters but also it is a realistic film because it is based on true story events.
Persuasive Techniques
It uses emotional manipulation because it makes you feel sad a certain points in the trailer but also makes you feel happy at other points because when a fighting scene comes up it has slow and quiet music to make you feel sad but then when everyone is laughing and cheering.
Portrayal of People in the Advertisement
How old are they?
Throughout the trailer we see many different ages of people for example the main actor Lincoln looks about 50 years old. Out of the whole film we see various ages because we see a man that looks about 60 years old that is in the armchair and there are soldiers that look about 18 and then you have Lincoln’s son. They use this because in those times the men usually above 50 are the people in charge they make the decisions but also the young people that go to war that was to very common.
What gender are they?
There are few women in the trailer because in those day men was stated as the higher class because you see all men in charge and that have authority but also there are no women that go to war because in those times the women was just meant to stay at home and do to cooking, cleaning and looking after the children.
Which social class are represented? How do you know?
Throughout the trailer many different social classes shown for example there are the lower classes, which are the black people in America, we know this because that’s is what the war is about because at one point a man says about how people should not be declared equal but those who God created unequal. Also you have the soldiers who would be second class we know this because they have more rights than others but now high enough to become first, then we see the men in nice houses and look posh and also Abraham Lincoln which will be first class we know this because in those days you had to be considered high class to be any sort of politician.
What do the clothing tell you? What are their facial expressions? Why?
In the trailer we see the clothing as old fashioned but you see different types for example you see old style army outfits they use this because it would not look right if they have modern soldier armour also you see many people in suits they were common at the time they show off how wealth you are. You also see many different facial expressions such as anger, peace and happiness for example you see that people are angry and outraged at the fact the black and white people should be together but also you see at one point the soldier in pain and has a crying type face because he has been wounded and towards the end you see that president Lincoln is happy to see his son playing.
What is their posture? Why?
What roles and stereotypes are being represented?
Many roles are played out in the trailer because there are people that and soldiers, lawyers and other important people and the president of the United States the kind of stereotypes played out are such as young people fighting in the war and older men in power.
How would you describe the relationship between these people?
I think that the relationship between the president is that towards the end everyone agrees with him and loves him, but at the start people was not so sure about it and people were arguing and they were questioning what he was doing
What other people could have been included? Why have they been excluded?
I don’t think anyone has been exluded from the trailer, I think they added more people in for example lawyers, presidential advisors, soldiers, regular Americans
