In the poster the main image is a medium close shot of the mad hatter who is holding a teacup outstretched in front of him in hands which are encrusted with blood. Oddly this gesture reminds us of the well-known pose, made famous by Oliver Twist; however the equally distinctive face we are looking at is not piteously pleading but instead is smiling madly. He seems to be offering the mug to us rather than asking for “more” from us. This ties in with the slogan, “you are invited to a very important date”, where the word “you” is obviously aimed at the audience, directly asking us to come and watch the film. As the poster was created to be seen by many people, it has the connotations that “you” applies to everybody in its audience. The film is not aimed at a particular, niche audience but instead at a wider core demographic of everyone from young children to adults.

His hair is an unnatural shade of red as are his eyes which are bright green and covered in ridiculous make up. He is represented as quite frightening wearing very pale makeup on his face which is only emphasised by the high key lighting directed on his visage contrasting to the low key lighting in the rest of the poster. Around his face the light is focused, which has an antique like feel, reinforcing the gothic feel which the film seems to try to focus on. The background is what appears to be green patterned wallpaper. This is surprising mise en scene as
