Lincoln Prep Reflection
Last year was my freshman year of high school and first year to be involved in the debate program at Lincoln College Prep. I have been involved in the program since middle school, which has largely cultivated my loved for learning and has given me skills that I find are of extremely high importance- not only has it provided me with portable skills and a huge amount of background knowledge on many subjects, but has also given me a community of people who support and encourage me in my endeavors. In my first year as a member of Lincoln Prep’s team, I learned more than I have in every other years put together. I attribute this largely to our former coach, who as an incredible teacher and mentor while he coached us. He was not afraid to teach us about controversial topics and to fill us in on current events. During that year, I partnered with a good friend from middle school. We did well in the novice level we competed again, which I again attribute to the coaching we received.
Throughout the year, our team dealt with a great deal of disrespect and contempt from opponents:

Because of the excessive discourtesy that our team faced regularly, our coach was very protective of all of us and would become very defensive towards those who were disrespectful to his students. There were often instances where our coach would become heated, which gained a reputation that eventually led to complaints directly to our principal. These complaints, along with personal issues that our principal had with our team (including our open discussion of sensitive topics), our coach was fired from his position towards the end of the year. As our team was still recovering from the death of an assistant coach that had happened a few months before, this was a huge blow to the team- we felt betrayed by our administration, and sorrow for our second loss of a coach in 5

Over the summer of 2015 I played for the Illinois Tornados All-Star rugby team and my team and I had gone through quite the rough patch in the Pittsburgh Regional All-Star Tournament when we tied one game and lost five. The expressions on the faces of my teammates were distressed and utterly disgusted by the performance we had put on. Coach Day was the head coach at the time and was on the verge of shedding tears; not because we had lost or because he was leaving for retirement,…

From the couch been prohibited to coach the team to actual physical and verbal aggression. They as a whole team tried to stay mentally strong. This method helped out and they were able to continue with the games and not let them be disturbed. A big part of this was because of who they were and that they didn't belong where they were. Lots of the discrimination was made to the racial profiling because they “didn’t belong there” because of who they were. Many of the players were really far from home to be able to get this help. Both the coach and the team were in completely foreign places and that was what they were received…

Recently I was voted MIA ambassador of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School along with Ben Manoogian. We went for an interview at PAT and got interviewed the superintendent. We spoke about the new turf field, how to be a good effective leader, and about our soccer seasons thus far. After the interview Mr. Buckley drove us back to the school, and he was speaking to us about the great opportunities we have at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. Although I hear those words often I never really listen. Mr. Buckely said, “Ben and Katrina you guys are great leaders and great soccer players, but remember you will not always be playing soccer. After college soccer will probably end for you. So take advantage of your education. You are a student before you are an athlete.” He went on to tell us his experiences, and how him dedicating himself to his schoolwork put him in the successful position he is in today.…

Because Paul Gaffney said this about team work in sports “Teamwork in sport presents a variety of special challenges and satisfactions. It requires an integration of talents and contributions from individual team members, which is a practical achievement, and it represents a shared pursuit, which is a moral achievement. In its best instances team sport allows members to transform individual interests into a common interest, and in the process discover of part of their own identities. Teamwork is made intelligible by the collective pursuit of victory, but moral requirements importantly condition that activity.” (Gaffney, Paul). I believe if the Point University Basketball team first understand the meaning of teamwork and how it can help them win games. There was one insistent of the team agreeing on one thing together. That day both the captains got together and said to the team what is one thing we are trying to accomplish as a team this year the whole team agreed and said the all want to win a conference campion chip or to get a ring. I believe that was the only sign of teamwork that I’ve seen come from the team this year where they all came to gather as a team and said we are going to when a championship this year. I think teamwork is one of the best keys that the team needs to come together and help each other win rather than each time they lost a game one of our player would never take credit for the lose the just took the “non-team player” is to selfish to take credit for the lost they just blame it on the…

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

I’ve persevered through many stages of my athletic career including being told by coaches at the age of 14, you will never be good enough to play varsity. I spent the next two years working passionately to be stronger, faster, smarter, and varsity quality. My hard work proved to be successful in baseball and the classroom. I was 2015 First Team All Orange County Player, All Sunset League Player two years, and CIF Champion. That hard work and dedication lead to multiple Division I offers. I choose Cal Poly because of the education, the baseball program, and the SLO community. I’ve been asked to share my story with little leaguers and high school athletes. Those opportunities to share with young students have offered me new prospective and understanding that I can achieve my career goals by obtaining a RPTA…

This is my second year on the Peabody Magnet High Soccer team, and I was even awarded the Coach’s award for playing midfield and made honorably mention in my district ranking. I also am the Co-Captain of the Peabody Flag line. Being on the soccer and flag teams taught me that hard work really pays off and really forced me to challenge myself. When the flag line first started, we did not have a coach or experience. Although we taught ourselves our own routines, techniques and twirls; we placed and won a 3rd place trophy in our first battle of the bands competition. It was the smallest trophy there, but it meant more to me than any big one could. It just proved to me again that if I put my mind to something I could accomplish…

As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. He told me that he had noticed my success during the season, and he wanted me to join the varsity team; for the varsity team still had two weeks of practice left before the state tournament. I held in my excitement and accepted his offer.…

Down in the locker room, one of my favorite coaches looked at my team and stated, “I’m sorry. I will not be returning next year to be your coach.” I sat there almost in tears, because at that moment my love for basketball almost left with him. Billy Martin was a favorite coach of mine. He loved each of us like one of his own, and treated all of us the same. He wanted each of us to succeed and would do anything to help us reach that. Coach Martin instilled in me no matter how talented a person was, you could always beat them by working hard. I could not believe he would not be my head coach next year, but he did soften the blow by saying he would still be around until we were use to our new head coach. We were all very upset about his department…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

There is no greater support system in the United States than a universities athletic department. With records to be broken, championships to be won and legacies to be created, college athletes are given special priorities. No college athlete is given more special treatment than college football players. They are given special buildings and receive thousands of dollars in scholarships and equipment and are treated as celebrities when they walk around campus. At universities across the country, coaches and athletic directors cover up any athlete’s mistakes that could result in their player’s suspension from the team, just to keep their playoff dreams alive. However, these athletes leave hundreds of victims behind, victims who are afraid to speak…

I was very respectful but wanted to know why he would treat me the way he did. Finally as the JV season ended, the varsity coaches approached me and told me they were proud of how I responded to the adversity and brought me up to play on varsity. As a sophomore that was a big deal to me. What I learned from that situation is that as long as you keep your composure, talk with the others to see their point of view, and always keep working hard, you will always conquer the adversity no matter what. I had to deal with constant adversity for almost 5 months but I beat it and learned a big life lesson. I am glad I went through that basketball…

Along with administering health care, my main goal for working in this setting is to be a positive influence in students’ lives and give back to the community by making the athletes that I serve into leaders. Being a leader and equipping others with the ability to become leaders is a passion of mine. What many people fail to notice is that this is a crucial time for many students as they attempt to grow into adults and not all coaches and athletic trainers seize the moment to support them along their journey. I want to be able to make an impact on students’ lives and change their…

While this looks poorly on the players I believe it was ultimately the coach’s fault in how he managed the team. I did not fit in well with the team due to the fact I highly respected the coach and what he were trying to accomplish. This lead to coach giving pretty demanding roles on the team that caused a lot of stress for me. This is how I experienced Hindrance Stressors. While I experienced all three stressors but the main one that affected me was Role Overload. My role and goal going into the season last year was to lead my team in scoring and be a dependable offense player. I ended up with several other roles due to the lack of work ethic my teammates showed. I became team captain and was also given many other roles that coach wanted me to accomplish on the court. This lead to me become overwhelmed and failing to complete some of the roles I was giving. My stats for that season suffered and my scoring went down. I simply had too many roles that I couldn’t…
