Dreams play a major role in deciphering subconscious psychological issues, such as fears, desires, and anxieties in Annie John. Dreams "have been interpreted as expressions of infantile desires or considered elaborations of the problems of waking hours". In Jamaica Kincaid’s Annie John, Annie’s dreams become a significant element in the way she views herself and the world around her. Annie comments about her dreams: "I had been taught by my mother to take my dreams seriously. My dreams were not unreal representations of something real; my dreams were a part of, and the same as, my real life" (Kincaid 89). Annie realizes that her dreams indicate the issues of her separation anxiety, reveal her conflicting desire to break away from her mother, and reflect her growth and development.…

She never wanted a job, because she thought her art career was going to bloom out of nowhere. It seemed like she would spend money on art supplies when her kids were hungry, wearing dirty clothing, or being very cold. She thought her artwork made the house better for everyone, and would ‘perk’ it up. “Since Mom had more paintings than we had wall space, Dad nailed long shelf brackets to the wall, and she hung one picture in front of another until they were three or four deep. Then she’d rotate the paintings. “Just a little redecorating to perk the place up,” she’d say. But I believed she thought of her paintings as children and wanted them to feel that they were all being treated equally.”(Walls 154) Instead of fixing the house, instead of buying better clothes or better beds for her children, she’s buying art supplies to paint pictures so her artwork can ‘perk the place up’. It’s not helping in the least. Her postive thinking about her painting’s, about having to perk the place up doesn’t help her or her children at…

For someone to be able to take away from adversity, they must have been able to find a way out. Those that are stuck in poverty, for example, with no real aid, have little chance of taking away a skill or talent if they are constantly at battle with their economic situation and having to take care of themselves and/or their family. If there is no hope and no way out, there is no way to be able to take anything away from the hardships that are being faced. In The Glass Castle, the only reason Jeanette became a successful writer is because she wrote for her school’s newspaper. This is where she learned her talent and love for writing. In this example, she was able to overcome the adversity she faced by expressing herself through her writing, but what about the children that are living in poverty and are abused that do not live in an area where this is available? Many children that are living in lower socioeconomic areas do not have as many opportunities, and are disadvantaged because opportunities like this are not available to them, and thus, do not have the means to escape their situations, let alone learn anything from…

Though their stories of struggles are similar, they overcome them in different ways. Penelope and Penny are both portrayed the same and have similarities, but there are differences between the two as well that make them different and unique, and that also ties them together in the end.…

I think that this quote is significant because it shows how different Jeannette’s views on life and her mother’s views on life are. Throughout the novel Jeannette is always trying to help her parents, but what she does not notice is that they are happy the way that they are. They enjoy the way that they are and have been living, and do not want Jeannette to try and change it. Her mother wants Jeannette to know that life is not all about materialistic things. You do not need money for happiness; all you need is to be happy with what you already have.…

The mother goes on to describe her rugged appearance and how her hands were rough and well-worked from everyday use. “In real life I am a large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. I can kill and clean a hog as mercifully as a man. I can work outside all day breaking ice to get water for washing”(347). Maggie can appreciate the things she has because of her mother’s hard work. This was passed on to Maggie and helped to shape her identity.…

One example that shows Maggie has little control over her life is her personal appearance. Maggie is a girl from an awful background with drunken parents and a small tenement she lives in. In general, one would expect someone from such an origin to be unattractive due to the fact she lacks the care it takes to become attractive. One occurrence of this is when Crane says, "The girl Maggie, blossomed in a mud puddle. She grew to be a most rare and wonderful production of a tenement district, a pretty girl" (13). This quote tells the reader that Maggie is a pretty girl, which is rare in her conditions. Maggie, being born in such a horrid environment, is unlucky to be born with such good looks. She cannot control what she looks like and in the end defies the odds by turning out to be pretty. Nature is indifferent about all things and the fact that Maggie is attractive proves that no matter ones circumstances nature is uncaring. Later in the novel Maggie becomes a prostitute who has to make her money from working on the street. Crane says, "A girl of the painted cohorts of the city went along the street. She threw changing glances at men who passed her, giving smiling invitations to men..." (48). This quote shows us that Maggie has now become a prostitute. Maggie's good looks influence her fate heavily. The main reason Maggie is capable of being a Prostitute has much to do with the fact that she is a pretty…
