Listeriosis
Have you ever eaten something that make your stomach and body not feel quite right? Thought you had just a bad case of the flu, but did you ever think it could be something more serious, which may lead to your own death or leave you paralyzed? A bacterium called Listeria Monocytogenes may be what you have ingested either from produce, liquid, or meat products. A gram-positive bacilli, which stains purple when tested in laboratory. The bacterium is normally found in a small chains linked together, or individually. It can also be known as a foodborne and waterborne infection. Listeriosis starts by ingesting food contaminated with the bacterium called Listeria Monocytogenes. This bacterium is commonly found widespread around the world. Listeria monocytogenes is mainly found in soil and water, but also can be found in mammals, plants and food.
Listeria is a germ that can be hard to control, due to ingesting foods that are usually not cooked like meats, cheeses, and vegetables. Also, after someone eats foods that were contaminated with listeria manifestation may take weeks to start showing. It is also able to grow on foods that are refrigerated, because it is a germ. Listeria is also able to camouflage itself causing it to not be noticed in equipment or appliances that are used to prepare food, commonly speaking of grocery stores and processing factories. The taste or color of the food is does not changed when it has been contaminated with listeriosis.
Listeria monocytogenes is resistant to cold, heat, salt, maximum pH, and bile. The ability for the listeriosis bacteria to invade a host cell is by listeria monocytogenes. In this process it is able to clone itself in the cytoplasm of the host cell, then it creates it’s own phagocytosis. By the bacterium moving from cell to cell, it is able to avoid the human immune system, forming an outcome of virulence. Listeria is the third leading cause of death in food poisoning.     “ Metropolis” directed by Fritz Lang is a science fiction, futuristic style film. It is about the socioeconomic differences in the futuristic city of Metropolis, between workers and the men who designed and ran the city. Rotwang and his robot woman encourage the underground workers to revolt which leads to the cities power generator bursting and flooding the whole city. Finally Rotwang and Freder battle for Maria and the people of Metropolis, on top of a cathedral and Rotwang ends up falling to his death. Freder becomes the mediator between the workers and the minds of the city. In the end Freder gets his girl and there is peace between the working class and the upper class. The main message of the film is, “that the mediator between brain and muscle must be the heart”. This illustrates the differences in classes of Germany at the time between the Weimar Republic and the people.
